Isothermal gas-liquid equilibrium (GLE) data have been measured for the system diethylene glycol (DEG) (1) + water (2) + SO 2 (3) + N 2 (4) at 298.15 K and 123.15 kPa and SO 2 partial pressures in the range of (0.7 to 100) Pa. Measurements were carried out by a saturation method using a glass absorption apparatus, which was controlled at constant temperatures by a thermostatic circulation bath with a Beckmann thermometer. The GLE compositions were obtained with relative uncertainties within ( 0.6 % for SO 2 concentration in the liquid phase and ( 3.5 % for SO 2 mole fraction in the gas phase. The measurement showed that the system DEG (1) + water (2) in the mass fraction range of w 1 ) (0.60 to 1.00) decreased the solubility of SO 2 and the system DEG (1) + water (2) in the mass fraction range of w 1 ) (0.00 to 0.60) increased the solubility of SO 2 . Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is gaining interest as an alternative green solvent in chemical synthesis and processing. This report presents density and viscosity data from 293.15 K to 358.15 K as well as self-diffusion coefficient data from 298.15 K to 358.15 K for oligomers of PEG from di-to nonaethylene glycol. The results were obtained by extrapolation from measurement series where water, the most common impurity in PEGs, was intentionally added in several increments. The obtained results are carefully compared to literature data, which are widely available only for density and viscosity, and only for the lower oligomers. Densities are found to be linearly dependent on temperatures for all studied oligomers. The temperature dependence of viscosity and self-diffusion coefficients show only slight deviations from the Arrhenius equation over the investigated temperature range. The activation energies obtained from the viscosity data agree well with the activation energies from the self-diffusion coefficient data and appear to be linearly dependent with respect to the number of ethylene oxide repeat units in the PEG oligomer. This linearity combined with the observation that the pre-exponential factor appears to be the same for all studied oligomers may serve as a tool to estimate viscosities and self-diffusion coefficients for higher oligomers within the investigated temperature range. The densities of the oligomers all fall within a rather narrow range without a clear trend in homologous series.

The absorption peak at 1327 cm –1 , which is reported at 1344 cm –1 for SO 2 in noncomplexing CCl 4 , can be attributed to the V as of SO 2 because the IR and Raman spectra indicate the following values for the fundamental frequencies: symmetry stretching band ( V s ) = 1151.38 cm –1 , δ = 517.69 cm –1 , and V as = 1361.76 cm –1 . Isothermal gas−liquid equilibrium (GLE) data were reported at 298.15 K and 123.15 kPa for the absorption of dilute SO 2 in aqueous glycerol solutions, in which SO 2 partial pressures are calculated in the range of (0 to 140) Pa. The GLE data were obtained with uncertainties within ±0.02 K for temperatures, ± 0.133 kPa for total pressures, ± 3.5% for SO 2 concentration in the gas phase, and ±5% for SO 2 concentration in the liquid phase. The measurements showed that the solubility of dilute SO 2 in the system of glycerol (1) + water (2) increases with the increasing glycerol concentrations in the whole composition, and the solubility of SO 2 in the system of glycerol (1) + water (2) presents an extreme minimum of 60.1 mg•L −1 at the mass fraction of w 1 = 1.00 when SO 2 in the gas phase is designed at y SO2 = 5 × 10 −4 . In addition, UV, FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), 1 H NMR, and fluorescence spectra in the absorption processes of SO 2 in the system of glycerol (1) + water (2) were investigated to present important absorption mechanism. Based on the spectral results obtained, the possibility of intermolecular hydrogen bond formation by hydroxyl oxygen atoms in the glycerol molecule with hydrogen atom in the H 2 O molecule and S•••O interaction formation by hydroxyl oxygen atom in the glycerol molecule with sulfur atom in the SO 2 molecule are discussed.
