Abstract. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that recently re-emerged in Africa and rapidly spread into countries of the Indian Ocean basin and South-East Asia. The mean viremic blood donation risk for CHIKV on La Réunion reached 1.5% at the height of the 2005-2006 outbreaks, highlighting the need for development of safety measures to prevent transfusion-transmitted infections. We describe successful inactivation of CHIKV in human platelets and plasma using photochemical treatment with amotosalen and long wavelength UVA illumination. Platelet components in additive solution and plasma units were inoculated with two different strains of high titer CHIKV stock (6.0-8.0 logs/mL), and then treated with amotosalen and exposure to 1.0-3.0 J/cm 2 UVA. Based on in vitro assays of infectious virus pre-and post-treatment to identify endpoint dilutions where virus was not detectable, mean viral titers could effectively be reduced by 6.4 ± 0.6 log 10 TCID 50 /mL in platelets and 7.6 ± 1.4 logs in plasma, indicating this treatment has the capacity to prevent CHIKV transmission in human blood components collected from infected donors in or traveling from areas of CHIKV transmission.

O objetivo deste estudo é investigar a ocorrência de sobremortalidade durante a epidemia de dengue ocorrida na Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, entre 2007 e 2008. Para obter a predição dos óbitos desses anos epidêmicos, um modelo dinâmico Poisson foi ajustado aos dados de mortalidade por dengue e por doenças que fazem parte do seu diagnóstico diferencial. Toda a inferência foi realizada sob o paradigma bayesiano. Verificou-se um excesso de mortalidade em março de 2008, em menores de 15 anos de idade. Paralelamente, em março e abril de 2008, houve o maior número de casos notificados de dengue no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Considerando que o aumento da mortalidade deve ser precedido por um incremento na morbidade, pode-se levantar a hipótese de que houve um excesso de mortalidade por dengue em crianças na epidemia de dengue ocorrida na Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, em março de 2008.

Timely registration of fatalities is important for the assessment of course, extent, risk of age groups, and magnitude or severity of health threats. Nevertheless, timely data of casualties are not available on the state or national level. The current paper describes the implementation and structure of a surveillance system for the timely registration of casualties in the state of Hesse (Germany) and the experience obtained during the pandemic 2009/10. The delay of the case-based registration appears tolerable and after 2 weeks more than 80% of all deaths for a given week are registered. In 2008, the forwarding of the electronically registered data from the registry offices (95% of all cases) to the state statistical office (HSL) had been accelerated from a monthly to a weekly base. The HSL provides--on a weekly basis--this case-based data in accordance with data protection rules to the Hesse State Health Office (HLPUG, "Hessischer Landesprüfungs- und Untersuchungsamt im Gesundheitswesen"). During the pandemic, the data allowed assessment of the excess mortality with a delay of 2 weeks. No significant excess mortality was apparent; however, a slight increase was observed in the age groups 15-34, 35-49, and 50-59. Correlation of time with the severity of the A/H1N1v epidemic was not very strong. Hence, the data did not indicate an excess significantly exceeding the number of death cases registered with the mandatory reporting system of 21 cases for Hesse.
