Excess mortality for men and women above age 70 according to level of care during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden: A population-based study

Abstract: Background Both age and comorbidity are established risk factors for death among those infected with COVID-19. Because they often co-exist, it is difficult to assess if age is a risk factor on its own. Methods We used administrative register data of the total Swedish population from 01/2015 until 07/2020. We stratified the population aged 70+ into three groups according to level of care (in care homes, with home care, and in independent living). Within these groups, we … Show more

“…Why there was so much more purported dry tinder in Sweden requires explanation. The risk discrepancy seems more likely to result from differences between Sweden and Denmark in how care and housing for the elderly are organised, coupled with a less successful Swedish strategy of shielding the elderly [ 13 ]. This interacts with the dry tinder hypothesis: if Sweden had a lot of dry tinder, perhaps Sweden should have made special efforts to protect those >85 years of age.…”

“…Regional home healthcare is administered in 136 institutions (care homes, with approximate capacity of 4,500 places) or, in a limited number of cases, in a patient’s home (approximately 2,500 individuals, with a proportion of them needing home care). In Sweden, the concept of home healthcare denotes consistent care of people unable to sustain independent living, 24 predominantly comprising elderly, frail and/or individuals with dementia, as well as those with severe and chronic multi-morbidity with similar limitations. As a rule, these individuals are treated in a home healthcare setting rather than being hospitalised.…”
