Objective: To determine overweight and obesity prevalence in preschool children from public education, and to determine their relation to food consumption. Method: Cross-sectional study with children aged between 2 and 5 years, of both sexes, enrolled at municipal day care centers. Socioeconomic, demographic and anthropometric data were collected, in order to calculate the body mass index (BMI) for age. Data on food consumption were assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. χ 2 test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation were used at a significance level of 5%. Results: Of 548 children, 52% were male, with mean age of 4.2 years old. Most families had incomes between 1 and 2 minimum wages (59.7%), in addition to 10 years (mothers) of education. Anthropometric parameters did not differ significantly between sexes. According to the BMI-for-age, it was found that most of children were well-nourished (85.2%), 8.2% had the risk of becoming overweight, and 4.2% were overweight. The most consumed foods were: rice (100%), beans (99.4%), bread (98.5%), fruit (98.5%), red meat (97.1%), butter and margarine (95.4%), biscuits, cakes and sweet pies (94.1%), dairy products (94.1%), chocolate milk (91.7%), and soft drinks (90.2%). Consumed foods that were strongly correlated (r > 0.7) to the risk of/excess weight were, as follows: bread; biscuits, cakes, sweet pies; dairy products; chocolate milk; sausages. Conclusion: There was low prevalence of overweight and absence of obesity among the population assessed. The risk of overweight was greater among girls. Data from the study showed deviations in food consumption.

Introdução: A difícil percepção dos pais em relação ao estado nutricional de seus filhos prejudica a promoção da saúde e prevenção de doenças. Objetivo: Identificar a percepção dos pais em relação ao estado nutricional dos seus filhos. Materiais e métodos: Estudo transversal com aferição de dados antropométricos de pré-escolares do município de Gravataí – Rio Grande do Sul (RS) e aplicação de questionário com os pais para identificação da imagem corporal através da escala de silhuetas de Tiggemann e estado nutricional com o propósito de confrontar as informações fornecidas pelos responsáveis com o real diagnóstico nutricional das crianças. Resultados: Dentre os pré-escolares avaliados, 36% eram eutróficos e 64% apresentavam risco nutricional. 100% dos pais classificaram como sendo normal o estado nutricional dos seus filhos. De acordo com a imagem corporal assinalada, 35,7% dos pais marcaram a mesma imagem para definir o estado nutricional dos filhos. Quanto à comparação entre a percepção dos pais e o real diagnóstico dos filhos, 62,5% das crianças com sobrepeso foram subestimadas pelos pais. Conclusão: Todos os responsáveis identificaram seus filhos como normais em relação ao estado nutricional. Contudo, a percepção dos pais a respeito do peso corporal tende a ser distorcida principalmente entre crianças com sobrepeso.

Nutritional status of children under five years of age in the metropolitan health region I state of Pará: SISVAN web 2016 to 2020

The present study aimed to characterize the nutritional status of children aged zero to five years in the Metropolitan Health Region I between the years 2016 to 2020. This is a descriptive quantitative study with secondary data from the National Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SISVAN - WEB). The collection of these data was carried out from June to July 2021. The results showed high percentages of children with nutritional deficits, such as Low Weight for Age, Low Height for Age and Low BMI for Age, as well as a significant percentage of eutrophic children and with High Weight for Age in the five municipalities from which the data were extracted (Belém, Ananindeua, Benevides, Marituba and Santa Barbara do Pará). It was possible to identify that nutritional problems caused by economic, demographic and social factors are directly impacting the nutritional status of children belonging to metropolitan health region I.
