Exciton Up-Conversion by Well-Distributed Carbon Quantum Dots in Luminescent Materials for an Efficient Organic Light-Emitting Diode

Abstract: In this work, we proposed an efficient and straightforward up-conversion process to enhance the external quantum efficiency in a red-emission organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The carbon quantum dots in the luminescent materials initiated the up-conversion by doping the (6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in an amount of 0.001 wt. %, and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) increased from approximately 80 to 9.27% without spectrum change. The time-resolved photoluminescence was applied to und… Show more

“…All used chemicals and solvents were reagent grade and used as received. pH buffers (3,4,7,9,12) for UV-vis analyses were purchased from Carlo Erba (Milan, Italy). Thinlayer-chromatography (TLC) was performed on silica gel 60F 254 plates (Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) and visualized with UV detection (254 nm and 365 nm).…”

“…Carbon quantum dots (CDs) are known as zero-dimensional carbonaceous nanomaterials with incomparable optical properties [ 1 , 2 ]. Since their accidental discovery in 2004, they have become a central topic of the scientific community because of their peculiar properties, which make them suitable materials for application in numerous fields, including in vitro and in vivo bioimaging [ 3 , 4 , 5 ], the development of antibacterial and antiviral agents [ 6 , 7 ], sensing [ 8 ], and optoelectronic devices [ 9 , 10 ]. In many cases, CDs are considered as graphitic carbon cores embedded in amorphous shells with different surface functionalities, such as carboxyl, amide, hydroxyl, and carbonyl moieties, which allow their derivatization with various entities (i.e., enzymes, etc.)…”

“…The donating of carriers from SiQDs to the FIrpic can be proved by the time-resolved PL (TRPL). The transient behavior in the TRPL can be modeled by the exponential decay with a time constant [35]. The time constant represents the lifetime of carriers in the material system that could contribute to the radiative light emission.…”
