Exclusive vector meson production at an electron-ion collider

Abstract: Coherent exclusive vector meson electroproduction is a key physics channel at an electron-ion collider. It probes the gluon structure of nuclei over a wide range of Q 2 , and can be used to measure nuclear shadowing and to search for gluon saturation and/or the colored glass condensate. In this paper, we present calculations of the kinematic distributions for a variety of exclusive vector meson final states: the ρ, φ, J/ψ, ψ and the Υ states. The cross-sections for light and cc mesons are large, while Υ states… Show more

“…The a + 2 (1320) and Z + c (4430) are produced in a relatively narrow rapidity regions because σ(γp → X + n) for both is largest near threshold, due to the Reggeon exchange mechanism. This is very different from the Pomeron+ Reggeon exchange process which spreads ρ 0 over a wide rapidity range [17].…”

“…It will also allow us to make a much cleaner determination as to whether the target nucleus remained intact, improving our measurements of incoherent photoproduction. Finally, it will produce billions of dipions, 10s of millions of J/ψ and of order 100,000 Υ [95] in a year, allowing for detailed measurements of coherent and incoherent photoproduction over a wide range of Q 2 .…”

“…Meanwhile, there has been a strong proposal to build an intermediate energy electron-ion collider in China (EicC) [32], where the energy range is ideal to study both near and sub-threshold Υ production in γp and γA collisions, respectively. There is also a possibility to study the nearthreshold production of Υ at the EIC in the U.S. [33] and at RHIC using ultraperipheral collisions [34]. Our calculations in this paper will provide an important guidelines for these future experiments.…”

“…4. This energy range is ideally suited for the EicC, but it could also be studied at the EIC in the U.S. [33], or even at RHIC by focusing on the ultraperipheral AA collisions (UPCs) [34]. We find that the Υ cross section near threshold is about 10 −3 ∼ 10 −2 nb, and this is further reduced to 10 −5 nb around the region W γp 9.7 GeV where the SRC contribution starts to dominate.…”
