Exercise performance and quality of life in children with cystic fibrosis and mildly impaired lung function: relation with antibiotic treatments and hospitalization

Abstract: Patients with mild CF lung disease have good exercise performance although still lower than the normal population. VO2max% is affected by number of antibiotic treatments over a longer period. There is an impact of hospitalization days on quality of life. What is Known: • Children with CF have lower exercise performance; there is an association between hospitalization frequency and exercise performance • Quality of life is diminished in children with CF and influenced by respiratory infections What is New: • Ev… Show more

“…The value of 6MWT in CF though is mixed. In patients with mild to moderate airflow obstruction, the 6MWT distance was found not to be different from that of aged matched healthy controls and tests of maximal exercise capacity are recommended to detect the presence of early disease [11, 12]. However, in more severe CF disease, such as our population, the 6MWT has been used as a prognostic indicator for transplantation.…”

“…concluded that physical fitness in children is associated with a lower risk of hospitalization [30]. Vandekerckhove et al [5] correlated last year hospitalization of children with CF with physical health, school functioning and total HRQoL score. Hospitalization rates in this population reflect pulmonary exacerbations, morbidity, mortality and are associated with worse disease management [31,32].…”

“…Segundo os pais/cuidadores, a maioria das crianças e adolescentes sentem cansaço na prática dos esportes em algum momento e, também foi percebido que a dispneia está presente. Vários estudos têm demonstrado que a tolerância ao exercício de crianças/adolescentes está reduzida quando comparadas com crianças sem a doença e que declina com o aumento da idade (STEVENS;OADES;WILLIAMS, 2015;VANDEKERCKHOVE et al, 2017;WEIR et al, 2017).…”
