Developing a self‐expanding hemostatic sponge with high blood absorption and rapid shape recovery for noncompressible hemorrhage remains a challenge. In this study, a 3D‐printed cuttlefish bone elastomeric sponge (CBES) is fabricated, which combined ordered channels and porous structures, presented tunable mechanical strength, and shape memory potentials. The incorporation of cuttlefish bone powder (CBp) plays key roles in concentrating blood components, promoting aggregation of red blood cells and platelets, and activating platelets, which makes CBES show enhanced hemostatic performance compared with commercial gelatin sponges in vivo. Moreover, CBES promotes more histiocytic infiltration and neovascularization in the early stage of degradation than gelatin sponges, which is conducive to the regeneration and repair of injured tissue. To conclude, CBp loaded 3D‐printed elastomeric sponges can promote coagulation, present the potential to guide tissue healing, and broaden the hemostatic application of traditional Chinese medicine.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to synthesize zinc‐incorporated nanowires structure modified titanium implant surface (Zn‐NW‐Ti) and explore its superior osteogenic and antibacterial properties in vitro and in vivo.Materials and methodsZn‐NW‐Ti was synthesized via displacement reactions between zinc sulfate solutions and the titanium (Ti) surface, which was pretreated by hydrofluoric acid etching and hyperthermal alkalinization. The physicochemical properties of the Zn‐NW‐Ti surface were examined. Moreover, the biological effects of Zn‐NW‐Ti on MC3T3‐E1 cells and its antibacterial property against oral pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) compared with sandblasted and acid‐etched Ti (SLA‐Ti) and nanowires modified Ti (NW‐Ti) surface were assessed. Zn‐NW‐Ti and SLA‐Ti modified implants were inserted into the anterior extraction socket of the rabbit mandible with or without exposure to the mixed bacterial solution (S. aureus, P. gingivalis, and A. actinomycetemcomitans) to investigate the osteointegration and antibacterial performance via radiographic and histomorphometric analysis.ResultsThe Zn‐NW‐Ti surface was successfully prepared. The resultant titanium surface appeared as a nanowires structure with hydrophilicity, from which zinc ions were released in an effective concentration range. The Zn‐NW‐Ti surface performed better in facilitating the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of MC3T3‐E1 cells while inhibiting the colonization of bacteria compared with SLA‐Ti and NW‐Ti surface. The Zn‐NW‐Ti implant exhibited enhanced osseointegration in vivo, which was attributed to increased osteogenic activity and reduced bacterial‐induced inflammation compared with the SLA‐Ti implant.ConclusionsThe Zn‐incorporated nanowires structure modified titanium implant surface exhibited improvements in osteogenic and antibacterial properties, which optimized osteointegration in comparison with SLA titanium implant surface.

The influence of the ultrasonic treatment of working fluids on electrospun amorphous solid dispersions

Based on a working fluid consisting of a poorly water-soluble drug and a pharmaceutical polymer in an organic solvent, electrospinning has been widely exploited to create a variety of amorphous solid dispersions However, there have been very few reports about how to prepare the working fluid in a reasonable manner. In this study, an investigation was conducted to determine the influences of ultrasonic fluid pretreatment on the quality of resultant ASDs fabricated from the working fluids. SEM results demonstrated that nanofiber-based amorphous solid dispersions from the treated fluids treated amorphous solid dispersions exhibited better quality than the traditional nanofibers from untreated fluids in the following aspects: 1) a straighter linear morphology; 2) a smooth surface; and 3) a more evener diameter distribution. The fabrication mechanism associated with the influences of ultrasonic treatments of working fluids on the resultant nanofibers’ quality is suggested. Although XRD and ATR–FTIR experiments clearly verified that the drug ketoprofen was homogeneously distributed all over the TASDs and the traditional nanofibers in an amorphous state regardless of the ultrasonic treatments, the in vitro dissolution tests clearly demonstrated that the TASDs had a better sustained drug release performance than the traditional nanofibers in terms of the initial release rate and the sustained release time periods.
