Expanding and Refining Design and Criticality in HCI

Abstract: The term 'critical design' is on the upswing in HCI. We analyze how discourses around 'critical design' are diverging in Design and HCI. We argue that this divergence undermines HCI's ability to learn from and appropriate the design approaches signaled by this term. Instead, we articulate two ways to broaden and deepen connections between Design and HCI: (1) develop a broader collective understanding of what these design approaches can be, without forcing them to be about 'criticality' or 'critical design,' na… Show more

“…Our study also speaks to a growing HCI discourse on Research through Design (RtD), using the material language of design as a form of generative, practice-based inquiry [20] that may invite critical reflection [52]. Kinds of design research artifacts in HCI [51] include technology probes [29], operational prototypes [51], provotypes [12], and most recently research products [44].…”

“…A largely separate line of design research under the broad rubric of speculative and critical design serves to surface values, critique social issues, and present alternative visions of the future by creating conceptual designs and design artifacts [17,51]. The artifacts created in these processes are considered "research products" rather than "prototypes"-that is, they are valued as they exist now, rather than representing an incomplete design still in product development [48].…”

“…Yet these are largely authorial practices [51], focusing on the values that designers and design researchers surface, critique, and envision. Our work suggests that these design artifacts can be used to elicit values reflections among other populations who are not the designers.…”

“…[59]. For example there have been heated debates about (mis)use of methods from ethnography [15] and design research [24,56] within HCI, and about whether HCI research needs to become more 'scientific' by focusing on replicating existing results [28].…”
