Expanding neurosurgery

Abstract: The history of medicine is replete with innovations in neurosurgery that have spurred further developments across the medical spectrum. Surgeons treating pathologies in the head and spine have broken ground with new approaches, techniques, and technologies since ancient times. Neurosurgeons occupy a vital nexus in patient care, interfacing with the clinical symptoms and signs afflicting patients, the pathology at surgery, and imaging studies. No other physicians occupy this role within the nervous system. This… Show more

“…Neurosurgery is an ever-growing field that witnessed revolutionary discoveries over the years. 9,10 Introduction of the operative microscope allowed neurosurgeons to push boundaries and expanding capabilities while operating on wide range of pathologies. 11,12 This visual enhancement allowed improved precision to reach delicate structures and deep-seated pathologies within the brain.…”

“…[7][8][9] Meanwhile, total citation count, number of papers published, and the more recent h-index are among the various bibliometrics used to objectively compare academic productivity among the authors. [10][11][12] There has been growing interest within the neurosurgery community to better illustrate emerging trends in neurosurgical training and academic promotion. Author bibliometrics have been especially scrutinized due to their increasing role as an objective measure of academic achievement outside of the status quo of standardized exam scores in residency admissions.…”

“…Modern neurosurgery, with a history of only 100 years, has been developing rapidly since its birth in the late 19th century. In past decades, modern neurosurgery has experienced three stages of development: classical neurosurgery, microneurosurgery, and minimally invasive neurosurgery [ 1 ]. Modern neurosurgery can be divided into neurotrauma, pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, cerebrovascular disease, skull base lesions, brain tumors, spinal neurosurgery, and other subdisciplines [ 2 ].…”
