Experience in construction and operation of low-head dams on permafrost soils

Abstract: A number of low-head dams of local materials have been built in recent years in the Vilyui River basin in the Yakut ASSR, for regulating the discharge, for supplying water to centers of population and industrial undertakings, and for developing lakes for various industrial purposes. The dams were constructed on the Irelyakh River and its tributaries, which have a very nonuniform discharge over the year, more than 90% of which is passed during the spring flood. During the winter, the river and its tributaries a… Show more

“…During the work under the project of rebuilding the experience of the closest analogue was considered. This analogue was heat electropower station on Anadyr which was worked for the 30 years in the same weather and climatic conditions and it was built on the same strong icy soils [1,2,4,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. The height of the dam on Anadyr is 16 m, the length on the ridge is 1330 m. The antifiltarion structure is realized as cryosolic screen with maximum depth 25 m and it is formed and supported by the system of steamand-liquid frozen equipment.…”

“…Two-phase closed heat pipe was comparatively widely applied in the practice of frozen soil engineering because of its high efficiency, simple and convenient construction [3]. Up to now, heat pipe has been a common measure in the airport, highway, industrial and civil buildings, and oil pipeline [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. In 1980s, heat pipe was used to stabilize the culvert in Qinghai-Tibet Highway.…”
