Simple and computationally efficient drill string models running real-time describing motion in all axes in directional wells are important for the implementation of closed-loop control and assisted monitoring during drilling operations. This paper proposes a new simplified three-dimensional model based on a parametric curve and lumped-parameter modeling, where Kane’s method is used to establish the equations of motion. Validation of the steady-state motion and convergence for the lumped model in vertical and horizontal alignment was compared with a finite-element model. The configuration and restoring forces show good results compared with finite-element analysis. Hence, the model demonstrate the axial contraction as a function of the body restoring forces being oriented to the inertial frame, inherently producing nonlinear coupled axial tension forces. The qualitative response of the model is confirmed in simulation case studies, being showcased by a deviated J-well configuration. Traveling block velocity and top drive torque are included as actuated inputs to analyze off-bottom friction and contact along the wellbore. The model is proposed to act as a virtual sensor for drilling directional wells.

SPE Members Abstract This paper will present recent technological innovations which have been used to surpass previous extended reach records together with other technologies which are viewed as fundamental in overcoming current limitations for extended reach and designer wells. The paper will focus on three specific drilling applications which provide a range of options for operating companies with varying field development philosophies. Introduction With records being continually broken in extended reach drilling (ERD) the obvious question is, how far can we go with existing technology? A recent well in the North Sea extended the step out record by 600. m to 7.8 km. The current limit is presently indeterminate, but as drilling technology continues to improve the final constraint may be economic rather than technical, as the limiting factors are gradually overcome. This paper will address some new technologies that will assist in increasing drilling reach and performance. Directional control and drilling efficiency are two items which have had significant impact on the decisions to attempt ERD and designer wells. The following directly contribute to improving directional control and drilling efficiency:–Tandem motors–Downhole adjustable stabilisers–Performance stabilisers The use of tandem motors offers more power than conventional motors and will increase overall rate of penetration (ROP). New intelligent multi-positional adjustable stabilisers can reduce hole tortuousity, thus extending the reach. It also allows inclination control, when drill string drag prevents further oriented drilling and maximises drill string rotation, which aids hole cleaning. A performance stabiliser, which is run below the motor, increases directional control. These technologies assist in optimising directional drilling performance. Fig. 1 represents a sample well profile that was generated to determine what capabilities were required to drill a 10 km stepout well at a true vertical depth (TVD) of 2900 m. This was an arbitrary two dimensional well profile generated to highlight potential problems in drilling such a well. As this was not based on any specific field, casing points were chosen that were feasible from a design perspective and to ascertain approximately how far out the casing could be run. The profile terminates in 8–1/2 in. hole as this is perceived to be the optimum configuration for most operators. There is obviously no unique 10 km stepout well as the complexity will depend particularly on the TVD of the reservoir which will subsequently determine the final measured depth and hole angle. This will have an impact on all associated activities including wireline logging, completion and workovers. Tandem Motors From the early days of single lobe, high speed-low torque to today's multiple lobe high torque-low speed configurations, the positive displacement motor (PDM) has become the workhorse in directional drilling. The need for improvement was driven by the operator's requirements of driving the latest bit technology and optimising drilling performance. P. 33

Wellbore instability remains an important and costly issue in many oil and gas fields. Field observations have shown that stress-related wellbore instability problems are still frequently encountered even though techniques to manage the problems have been adopted. The problems can be a main factor in reducing the benefits of introducing innovative drilling technology. This paper describes the methodology and procedures for determination of optimum wellbore profile and mud weight program based on rock mechanics considerations. The comprehensive methodology, covering all key aspects of wellbore instability, is presented in the form of guideline charts. The application of the methodology and procedure is described and demonstrated through three field case studies for a range of in-situ stress regimes in various parts of the world. Introduction Wellbore instability remains an important and costly issue in many oil and gas fields. It has been estimated that on a world-wide basis, in excess of US$500 million is lost each year because of wellbore instability1. Although various techniques to mange the problems have been adopted, field observations have shown that stress-related wellbore instability problems are still frequently encountered. The problems can be a main factor in reducing the benefits of introducing innovative drilling technology. This paper describes the methodology and procedures for determination of optimum wellbore profile and mud weight program based on rock mechanics considerations. The comprehensive methodology, covering all the key aspects of wellbore instability, is presented in the form of guideline charts. The application of the methodology and procedure is described and demonstrated through three field case studies for a range of in-situ stress regimes in various parts of the world. They demonstrate the practicality and feasibility of the approach in wellbore profile design. The methodology consolidates the various critical factors into a manageable, pragmatic framework which can be used in routine wellbore profile design for efficient wellbore instability management. Wellbore Failure and Prevention For a better understanding of the guideline charts, it is necessary to briefly describe mechanical (stress-induced) wellbore failure mechanisms and their prevention approaches. Drilling a well in a formation changes the initial stress state and causes stress redistribution within the rock surrounding the wellbore. The redistributed stress state may exceed either the tensile or shear strength of the formation which will lead to failure. The stress state around the wellbore comprises contribution from the in-situ stresses and the wellbore pressure imposed by the mud column. Fig. 1 depicts different failure modes in relation to the principal stresses imposed on the material. When the mud pressure is not sufficiently high to support the wellbore, breakout and toric shear failures, and exfoliation tensile failure can occur. However, when the mud pressure is excessively high, it can cause helical and elongated shear failures, and hydraulic fracture. In addition, due to the presence of bedding planes in shale, wellbore failure may be initiated by shear or tensile failure of the planes of weakness. Therefore, wellbore stability analysis should consider bedding plane failure. Ideally a mud weight program should provide mud pressure which will prevent failure of any type simultaneously. Fig. 2 shows an example of critical mud weights required to prevent both tensile and shear failures of intact rock and bedding planes. The highest lower bound and the lowest upper bound values define the safe mud weight window to prevent wellbore instability.
