Experience with three-dimensional exoscope-assisted surgery of giant mastoid process osteoma

Abstract: Background The excision of a giant mastoid process osteoma can be challenging. In such situations, the three-dimensional exoscope intra-operative optic may be a promising tool. Case report This paper provides a technical description of a giant mastoid osteoma excised under three-dimensional exoscope magnification. A fragmented excision by intralesional curettage was adopted to prevent peri-tumoural damage. This technique had been previously described for the excision of large osteomas of… Show more

“…It consists of an on-demand postauricular approach to expose the lesion and cleavage of the tumor from unaffected cortical tissue, by a bone chisel, curette, or drilling, depending on the features of the osteoma [ 1 , 7 , 16 , 17 ]. There is only one reported case of three-dimensional exoscope-assisted surgery of a giant lesion [ 19 ]. Craniotomy and cranioplasty may be considered for greater tumors.…”

“…The utilization of the 3D 4K exoscope has found notable application within various facets of adult otorhinolaryngology (ORL) and head and neck surgery. Notably, in the domain of ear surgery, its implementation has encompassed stapedotomy [4], mastoid surgery [5], tympanoplasty [6], and, significantly, the facilitation of cochlear implantation [7]. Case series have surfaced that have detailed exoscope-assisted procedures, such as temporal bone resection [8] and diverse skull base surgeries, spanning both anterior approaches [9] and lateral interventions [10].…”
