Varying salt density solar pond is a method that is best suited to absorb and store solar energy. This examination includes the test enhancement of the permeable and non-permeable sunlight-based ponds dependent on its exhibition in different conditions. This experiment was done in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. This particular topographical area has a high level of solar radiation and is a tropical district. Readings for a period of 30 days were taken; the temperature circulation, a measure of heat energy stored and concentration of salt density was assessed. For examination, two comparable solar ponds of volume 0.02 m3 and a height of 0.32 m was built. Black granite pieces, broken glass pieces, and welding spatter were used as a permeable medium in the lower convective zone (LCZ) in one of the two solar ponds. The temperatures of the permeable solar pond and non-permeable solar pond reached the highest values of 42.3℃ and 40.6℃ respectively. The solar pond with a permeable medium demonstrated an increase of 4.18% in temperature. The difference in amounts of stored thermal energy is 4.54 kJ. From the obtained parameters, the optimization is done and the permeable medium solar pond is found to store more amount of heat energy than the non- permeable solar pond. For the optimization of the mixed medium, criterion parameter βelk has been acquired in the solar pond.

Non-conventional energy is one of the clean energy resources. In this, solar energy is plentiful and contains high exergy among non-conventional energy sources. Thermal energy storage is a method of storing thermal energy by heating a storage material that may subsequently be used for heating or power generating. This study focused on the development of solar ponds for effective solar energy storage. The study depicts the heat fluctuation in a solar pond with phase change material and Nanomaterial. Paraffin wax was used as a phase change material and the performance has been investigated and compared with the addition of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and silver-titanium oxide. The experiment was conducted out on the solar pond without and with phase change material, as well as with carbon nanotubes and silver-titanium oxide inclusion. The experimental results exhibit that the phase change material used to store the majority of solar energy, the temperature difference measured at night for the solar pond with nanoparticle-infused phase change material was minimal. The energy storage capacity of the solar pond increases by 7.8%, 21.8%, and 25% when it is coupled with paraffin wax, silver-titanium oxide/paraffin wax, and carbon nanotubes/paraffin wax. The average temperature variation of the solar pond was observed on the weekly basis by 3°C, 5°C, and 7.5°C when it is coupled with paraffin wax, silver-titanium oxide/paraffin wax, and carbon nanotubes /paraffin wax respectively. It is concluded that compared to simple phase change material, the silver-titanium oxide, and carbon nanotubes have better performance in the storage of thermal energy.

Fluorine‐Containing Branched Sulfonated Polyimide Membrane for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Applications

A series of fluorine‐containing branched sulfonated polyimide (Fb‐SPI) membranes with different degrees of branching (0–12 %) were synthesized through polycondensation. The chemical structure of Fb‐SPI‐10 membrane was confirmed using ATR‐FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The physico‐chemical properties of Fb‐SPI membranes were systematically investigated and compared to linear SPI (l‐SPI) and Nafion 117 membranes. The vanadium‐ion permeabilities of Fb‐SPI membranes (2.45–0.99×10−7 cm2 min−1) are much lower than that of Nafion 117 (17.1×10−7 cm2 min−1) membranes. Besides, the chemical stability of Fb‐SPI membranes is superior to that of l‐SPI membranes. During 500‐time continuous cyclic charge‐discharge measurements, the VRFB assembled with a Fb‐SPI‐10 membrane shows higher coulombic efficiency (98.4–99.7 %), higher or close energy efficiency (69.0–79.7 %) from 40 to 80 mA cm−2, and higher or close capacity retention (52.8–100 %) from 40 to 70 mA cm−2 compared with a device using a Nafion 117 membrane. All of these results demonstrate that the as‐selected Fb‐SPI‐10 membrane has promising potential for VRFB applications.
