Besides improving the generator torque and blade pitch controller, incorporating additional control actuations, such as a vibration absorber and active ballast, into the floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) system is also promising for the motion mitigation of FOWTs. This work aims to study the catenary mooring length re-configuration effect on the dynamic behaviours of semi-submersible FOWTs. The mooring length re-configuration mentioned here is achieved by altering the mooring length with winches mounted on the floating platform, which is in a period of minutes to hours, so that the mooring tensions could be adjusted to reduce the aerodynamic load induced platform mean pitch. Control designs for both single mooring line and multiple mooring lines have been described and studied comparatively. In order to assess the motion mitigation performance of the proposed mooring line length re-configuration methods, fully coupled numerical simulations under different environmental cases have been conducted. Results indicate that the catenary mooring length re-configuration is able to reduce the platform pitch motion by up to 15.8% under rated condition, while careful attention must be paid to the scenarios where the catenary moorings become taut, which may lead to large load variations.

This study investigates numerically the dynamic responses of the T-Omega Wind novel concept of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine. The turbine is light-weight, has a shallow-draft and a relatively high centre of gravity that allows it to glide over harsh marine environments. The turbine responses are studied under regular wave excitation, considering most probable ranges of discrete sea wave heights and periods representative of real ocean conditions. A multibody virtual model is developed, simplified to a rigid 6 DOF system and experimentally validated in the state-of-art Marine Simulator to define the types of dynamical responses for both “Low” and “High” Sea States. The dynamics of coupled heave and pitch DOFs are evaluated with time histories, phase-plane portraits, Poincaré sections and FFT analyses to conclude that period-1 stable solutions exist for all studied cases of “Low Sea States”, whereas period-2, period-3 and period-4 periodic responses are identified for short wave periods of excitation under “High Sea States” conditions. Simulation results show that regions where period-1 responses exist are highly sensitive to wave height and can widen as the wave amplitude reduces. Finally, the turbines’ nonlinearities generated by the floats’ geometry are observed in this dynamical system, which are identified to be related to variation in float waterplane area and particularly observable for “High Sea States”.

The global floating offshore wind industry is experiencing rapid growth, but stability regulations are often limited. Reducing platform motions can increase turbine efficiency and support hybrid wind-wave energy systems. This paper presents an experimental study on the dynamics of a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) conducted in an enclosed Wave–Wind Flume (WWF) employing an image-based methodology. The study analyzes the effects of different sea states and the role of a Centerboard and Heave plate (CH) system in decreasing the platform’s motions. The study confirms a significant decrease in overall platform response, approximately 6%, along the longitudinal plane under various sea conditions due to the implemented system. Notable changes were also observed in the Response Amplitude Operators (RAO) at different periods, particularly pitch motion, which showed an average reduction of 27%. The surge, heave, and pitch responses consistently showed lower values when the system was installed, with a mean decrease of 25% across test cases. These results demonstrate the CH’s effectiveness in improving the platform’s dynamics and indicate that it can be integrated into other floating platforms’ designs to assess and improve their performance under distinct sea conditions.
