Experimental Determination of the Initial Collection Efficiency of Granular Beds in the Inertial-Impaction-Dominated Region

Abstract: Initial collection efficiencies of granular beds were deterpared against one another in order to assess the possible mined experimentally in the inertial-impaction-dominated effect of the instrument itself. The experimental results regime using three different particle counters for concenwere also compared with available empirical correlations tration measurements. The results obtained were comand were used to develop a new correlation.

“…Inertial impaction in a granular bed has been then shown to be adequately correlated (D'Ottavio & Goren, 1983;Jung et al, 1989) in terms of the simpler problem of inertial impaction on a single "unit" spherical collector exposed to a uniform particle stream of an effective velocity, U eff ≡ Au s .…”

“…Impact on spherical collectors Jung et al (1989) have conducted experiments with monodisperse latex particles (1-5 m) impacting on glass beads (100-500 m) assembled into granular beds in the impaction dominated regime and have also compiled data of previous studies to derive useful correlations for the so-called capture efficiency of a single unit-collector (e.g. see Tien, 1989).…”

“…Inertial force is a dominant collection mechanism at high filtration velocity, high particle density, and large particle size (Larbot et al 2003). The single collector efficiency, h I, is expressed in Equation (8) as suggested by Jung et al (1989) :…”

“…Researchers have also proposed many different mathematical models for the GBF theory. 24,25 However, because the deep ltration of granular bed involves the uid mechanics theory of two-phase uid through the porous medium, it is really an extremely complicated physical process. Moreover, the ltration process of GBF has a certain randomness so that the experimental data is difficult to obtain accurately.…”
