Experimental hyperprolactinemia in a rat model: alteration in centrally mediated neuroerectile mechanisms

Abstract: Introduction: The purpose of this study was to induce hyperprolactinemia in adult male rats and determine its effect on the central and peripheral mediated neurogenic as well as myogenic mechanisms of erectile functionadysfunction in a rat model. The use of penile re¯exes in awake animals was used to test the effect of both central and peripheral mechanisms. Electrical stimulation of the cavernous nervous was used to test peripheral neural function and intracorporal injection of papaverine was used to test the… Show more

“…This position is supported by a wealth of data from both animal and human studies demonstrating a marked inhibitory effect of hyperprolactinemia on sexual drive, arousal and gonadal function (Doherty et al 1986, Walsh & Pullan 1997, Yazigi et al 1997, Rehmann et al 2000. Importantly, these effects are reversed upon pharmacological or surgical restoration of normal prolactin levels (De Rosa et al 1998, Verhelst et al 1999.…”

“…Hyperprolactinemia can depress sexual behavior and reduce sexual potency in men (Drago, 1984;Krü ger et al, 2005) and depress genital reflexes in rats (Rehman et al, 2000). Rehman et al (2000) demonstrated a central neurological effect of hyperprolactinemia on erectile function.…”

“…Rehman et al (2000) demonstrated a central neurological effect of hyperprolactinemia on erectile function. Hypogonadism did not seem to contribute to impaired penile reflexes as documented by the fact that replacement of testosterone did not recover the depressed centrally mediated penile reflexes.…”

“…The results were published earlier this year. 15 There has been some controversy about what the actual effects of hyperprolactinemia are: whether they are central or penile effects. We created a hyperprolactinemic model in the rat by injecting prolactin.…”
