Experimental investigations on the influence of ice floating in an internal melt ice-on-coil tank

Abstract: In this paper, the discharge of an experimental ice-storage tank is analyzed. The storage tank is an internal melt-ice-on-coil system. The discharge process has been studied for different mass flow rates and supply temperatures in the range from 10ºC to 15ºC. The results indicate that once the ice breaks and floats towards the top of the tank, convection in the ice/water mixture is enhanced and the heat transfer fluid in the top coils becomes colder than in the bottom coils. Thus, an increase of the cooling po… Show more

“…The separation of ice from different surfaces of the inner and outer tubes played an important role on the PCM temperature distribution. This was consistent with López-Navarro et al[15]. While the PCM Near Tube Bottom thermocouple showed a gradual increase during the melting process, the PCM Near Tube Top showed different peaks along the melting process.…”

“…The experimental installation (López-Navarro et al, 2012;López-Navarro et al, 2013) is located at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain). The set-up, which is shown in Fig.1, has been designed to characterize LHS systems within a temperature range from -10 to ºC.…”

“…Basically, the installation consists of a heating and cooling circuit which allow to heat or cool the heat transfer fluid of the thermal storage tank. All of the components, as well as the uncertainty of the measurement equipment, have been presented in recent literature (López-Navarro et al, 2012;López-Navarro et al, 2013). For this reason, the present publication focuses in updating the recent modifications in the test bench.…”

“…The better overall efficiency was obtained at the lowest supplied temperatures and mass flow rates. Lopez-Navarro et al [5,6] performed an experimental analysis of an internal melt-ice-on-coil system. The total refrigeration capacity of the installed set-up was 172 kWh.…”
