Experimental Signature of Medium Modifications forρandωMesons in the 12 GeVp+AReactions

Abstract: The invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs produced in 12 GeV proton-induced nuclear reactions are measured at the KEK Proton Synchrotron. On the low-mass side of the meson peak, a significant enhancement over the known hadronic sources has been observed. The mass spectra, including the excess, are well reproduced by a model that takes into account the density dependence of the vector meson mass modification, as theoretically predicted.

“…Since this term is introduced phenomenologically to simulate the suppression of the vector potential in RBHF [41], it would be necessary to introduce other types of coupling, such as the scalar meson-vector meson coupling, σ 2 ω 2 [28,69]. The scalar-vector coupling acts to modify the in-medium vector meson mass [21,74]. It may be interesting to invoke the results of strong coupling lattice QCD with finite coupling effects, where the plaquette contribution is found to generate the vector potential [75].…”

“…[17] and [18]. In contrast, the KEK team had earlier reported an attractive mass shift of the ρ in [19] and [20]. As explained in detail in Ref.…”

“…Using a 12-GeV proton beam at KEK, the E325 Collaboration reported a significant reduction in the ρ mass [14]. However, with a 1-3.5-GeV incident-energy photon beam at JLab, the CLAS Collaboration [15,16], using an absolutely normalized background subtraction procedure, found not a significant mass shift but rather a moderate broadening of the dilepton excess spectrum associated with ρ decays (cf.…”
