Experimental Study of Imbibition Characteristics of Silica Sol in Coal-Measure Mudstone Matrix

Abstract: Coal-measure mudstone is a typical dual-porosity media, and grouting in a matrix system is dominantly controlled by the imbibition effect for silica sol. This paper studies the imbibition effect using mudstone in the Huaibei mining area and silica sol as grouting material as an example. Groutability, driving force, and diffusion difficulty affecting the imbibition effect were tested by a mercury porosimeter, nanoparticle size analyzer, optical contact-angle measuring device, surface tension meter, and rotary v… Show more

“…When ionic sodium is added, the electric double layer becomes thinner and the silica particles connect to form a gel. Some of the physical and chemical parameters [ 2 , 17 ] of the silica sol and NaCl catalyst are listed in Table 1 . Gel time of silica sol to catalyst of 4:1, 7:1, and 9:1 (by volume) is 10 min, 2.67 h, and 9.33 h, respectively.…”

“…Nano silica sol is a kind of grouting material made up of nanometer particles that is highly transmissive [ 1 ]; it has been used in the geotechnical field in recent years [ 2 ]. Jurinak [ 3 ] developed a practical fluid-flow control system based on colloidal silica gel for oilfield reservoirs.…”

“…The maximum frequency size of Marithan ® resin and catalyst ( d ) are 2.69 nm and 615.14 nm, respectively, while the particle sizes of the grout cumulative distribution curve corresponding to 95% (d ) for resin and catalyst are 3.62 nm and 824.99 nm, respectively. According to the groutability principle of fracture or porous mediums, the width of the fractures or pores the grout could be injected into is bigger than triple the grouting material particle size [41]. The particle sizes over triple the d and d on the cumulative distribution curve of Marithan ® resin are 8 nm (R × ) and 11 nm (R × ), respectively.…”
