Experimental study of the dynamic behavior of a log boom employed at hydropower plants.

Abstract: The incidence of wooden debris in Santo Antônio hydropower plant (HPP) is a major issue to be addressed in order to avoid its own reduction efficiency. Log booms are floating structures assembled to form barriers upstream of the plant to protect its machinery, mainly against wood logs. Given their huge proportions and the turbulent environment where they operate, to understand its dynamics and movements is very important to achieve better performances in terms of design and operation. The use of experimental t… Show more

“…The differences in forces at both ends caused by the inclination of the log boom line, also discussed in Castro (2021), are reproduced on both models. The differences in scales show that treating the variables in non-dimensional coefficients is justifiable to reproduce the FSI phenomenon at the adopted Fr range.…”

“…In one of the methods, net is assumed as a catenary curve and used previous lift and drag coefficients, from experimental data of tests performed by Løland (1991), to create a semi-empirical tool to calculate loads and deformation on nets in uniform current. Castro (2021) has conducted an experimental investigation of log booms analyzed as truncated lines and individual bodies to predict their dynamic behavior in the presence of hydrodynamic flow with debris.…”
