Coal gangue spontaneous combustion produces toxic and harmful gases. This research aims to study a new type of polymer nanocomposite inhibitor to prevent and control coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Nanomodification of montmorillonite (MMT) was carried out on high polymer emulsion inhibitor polyacrylamide (PAM) to improve its thermal stability and overcome the short inhibition duration problem. First, through scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and proximate analysis experiments, it was found that the coal gangue in the Yangquan mining area was prone to spontaneous combustion. Then, PAM/MMT was produced by an intercalation method. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the interval spacing of MMT increased, which was sufficient for the insertion of acrylamide monomer. The vitrification temperatures of PAM and PAM/MMT prove that PAM/MMT exhibited higher thermal stability. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments indicated that the PAM/MMT composite inhibitor agent effectively inhibited the oxidative activity of reactive groups on the coal gangue surface. As a result, PAM/MMT could suppress coal gangue oxidative spontaneous combustion, so as to reduce environmental problems caused by coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Furthermore, a spraying process is designed for the application of the inhibitor.

In order to find out the optimal concentration of ionic liquid to lower the cost of inhibiting coal spontaneous combustion, effects of aliphatic hydrocarbons, hydrogen bonds, and some structural parameters of coal samples treated with low‐concentration ionic liquids were analyzed through Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and temperature‐programmed experiments. Meanwhile, the changes of index gases in the heating process were observed by the temperature‐programmed method. The results show that the contents of aliphatic hydrocarbons in the treated coal samples decrease remarkably, so does the length of aliphatic chain CH2/CH3; besides, the amount of CO produced also decreases to some extent. When the mass concentration ratio is 1:10, HB‐tc, BB‐tc, AC‐tc, and BN‐tc can reduce the spatial structure and enhance the structural stability of aromatic clusters in coal. The CO concentrations of 1:2 HB‐tc and 1:10 AC‐tc are obviously lower than that of raw coal, indicating their better inhibitory effects. The inhibitory effect of HB‐tc decreases with the decrease in concentration. With the rise of temperature, the effect of concentration on the inhibition of CO production gradually weakens at 180°C and 200°C. AC‐tc achieves the optimum inhibitory effect near 1:10 mass concentration ratio.

This present study contribute to provide a simple technology to early detect the phenomenon of spontaneous coal combustion. A new prototype is designated to detect the CO gas formation as a product of initial coal oxidation. Moreover, several parameters including coal quality, coal weight sample, ambient temperature, and air flow were employed to investigate the effects of each parameter to the CO formation time. The results show that the coal characterisation have a significant effect in the CO formation time where the coal having a higher fixed carbon and high grass calorific values provide the high liability of spontaneous coal combustion. However, these finding only occurred in low weight sample where in the high coal weight sample only fixed carbon plays the main role in determining the CO formation time. Furthermore, the prototype ambient temperature become the important parameter in the boosting of CO formation time where airflow only enhance the CO formation time in low temperature condition (below 29°C). Moreover, these findings opens a new sight in coal management, especially in Indonesia, where controlling the coal and atmosphere temperature could effectively prevent the spontaneous coal combustion especially in coal stockpile. Nevertheless, the other factor including airflow and coal weight sample also need perfect controlling because all of these factors potentially create a perfect environment to combust the coal spontaneously.
