Experimental Study of the Usage of Combined Biopolymer and Plants in Reinforcing the Clayey Soil Exposed to Acidic and Alkaline Contaminations

Abstract: In the last decade, biopolymers have been extensively studied, showing a great potential in soil reinforcement and the promotion of vegetation growth with limited environmental impact. In this paper, a soil reinforcing method with combined biopolymer (xanthan gum, XG) and plants (oat) was proposed to strengthen the clayey soil with different pore fluid pH values. A series of laboratory tests were conducted, mainly including the plant cultivation tests and the direct shear tests. It was found that oats grew bet… Show more

“…With no ploughing of green manure plants, the biological measures failed to significantly improve the soil. Therefore, under drought conditions, soil improvement with plant measures is highly dependent on artificial water recharge [ 70 ], which is time-consuming and laborious with little effect [ 71 ].…”

“…A unique approach combining plant growth and amendment of xanthan gum has been suggested for remediation purposes of heavy-metal-contaminated soils by Ni et al [ 158 ], who noted a significant (over 50%) decrease in soil heavy metal concentrations when a xanthan soil content of 0.25% was applied on clay soil with growing oat. Apart from enhancing the soil strength, the biopolymer–plant–soil reinforcing method was also able to improve the soil environment.…”

“…Based on the potential of biopolymers to promote plant growth and improve soil mechanical properties, Ni et al (2024) explored the effects of biopolymers on plant growth, demonstrating that biopolymers improved water availability growing plants nutrient uptake. Additionally, Ni et al (2022) proposed the "xanthan gum-oat joint soil stabilization method", which has achieved significant results in enhancing the strength and erosion resistance of cohesive soil. This method has shown good results in improving the stability of shallow soil slopes contaminated by acid and alkali and the geotechnical properties of rocks and soil.…”
