“…Previous studies suggested that electro-acupuncture on Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Zusanli (ST36) could modulate homeostasis of the hypothalamic GnRH level in physiologic rats [17]. Wang et al [26] found that acupuncture on the acupoints located at the same neural segment with the reproductive organ, such as Guanyuan (CV4) point and Shenshu (BL23) point that we used in the present study, could activate GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus. The present results showed that hypothalamic GnRH mRNA expression declined in both the PM1 group and the PM3 group compared to the model group, but no significant change was found in the PM2 group (p = 0.068).…”

“…Our study focused on symptomatic improvement using validated questionnaires for a more robust assessment of change. Nonetheless, some rat model studies by Wang et al33, 34 evaluated hypothalamic function after activation by acupuncture and showed increased electrical activity of excitatory neurons related to stimulation of sexual arousal. Although we did not use an animal model, our population included reproductive-age women similar to the research of Wang et al and our subjects reported increased sexual arousal.…”
