Experimental study on flint hammerstone use in Discoid-Levallois technologies: A comparison with the workshop assemblages of the central Iberian Peninsula

Abstract: Abstract:The basins of the Manzanares and Jarama rivers have been connected to human activity since the early Palaeolithic. At the boundary between these rivers the abundance of flint has given place to exploitation and mining activities even in historical times. In recent years, projects related to urban expansion in the southeast of Madrid have brought to light various Palaeolithic deposits associated with workshops and tool production. These sites do not have evidence of river pebbles of quartzite, quartz o… Show more

“…Macro-lithic tools are also related to the production of knapped stone tools. Indeed, hammerstones and retouchers made of stone [4,21,71–73] and bone [74,75], are found in numerous contexts, especially related to the later phases of the Palaeolithic [4]. As an example, bone retouchers have been found in different Middle and Late Pleistocene sites [76,77,78–85, 86].…”

“…Nineteen hammerstones have been found in the assemblage (0.30% of the total material), mostly registered in int and some in quartzite, all as the result of recycling items from other categories. This procurement strategy has been recorded at some other sites in the inter uvial quarries of Madrid (Baena Preysler et al, 2014;Lamas et al, 2016). Quartzite pebbles are absent in this non-uvial sedimentary context.…”
