Experimental study on the aerodynamic and separating characteristics of a novel tiny‐oil ignition cyclone burner for down‐fired utility boiler

Abstract: A novel tiny-oil ignition cyclone burner is presented in this paper. Such a burner is an improvement and modification of the cyclone burner of the Foster Wheeler (FW) Company. In order to reduce the oil consumption during the start up and low load operation of the W-shaped flame pulverized coal-fired utility boiler, tiny-oil technology is introduced to the cyclone burner based on the design concept of staged ignition. This burner is employed in down-fired boiler, with the advantages of burning low volatile coa… Show more

“…For instance, a lean coal-fired 300 MWe utility boiler consumes approximately 100 tons of fuel oil during the entire ignition process [4]. The annual oil consumption for a Chinese power plant is 1.6 × 10 7 t, 60% of which is the start-stop oil consumption, and the remainder is the partial load oil consumption [5]. For the sake of saving oil and reducing the economic cost of power plants, many novel ignition technologies have been developed, such as plasma-assisted burners, microwave-assisted burners, and tiny oil ignition burners [6][7][8].…”

“…Down‐fired boiler (also called down‐shot fired boiler or W‐shaped flame boiler) is a kind of power plant boiler specially designed to burn low volatile coals that have lots of problems in timely ignition, stable combustion, and sufficient burnout . It has the advantage of high furnace temperature, long combustion distance of pulverized coal/air flow, and so on . Since 1990s, down‐fired boiler has been introduced to China from North Africa and Western Europe.…”

“…The cyclone is widely applied in various industries such as chemistry, refining, metallurgy, and coal because of its simple structure, compact equipment, convenient installation, low cost, and high separation efficiency . In recent years, with the increasing demand for environmental indicators, the adaptability, efficiency, and stability of the cyclone have been put forward higher requirements .…”
