Experimental study on the oxidation kinetics of coal in typical coal mining areas of the Southern Junggar coalfield, Xinjiang, China

Abstract: Coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) is a disaster associated with coal mining that leads to loss of coal resources and environmental and human health issues. To investigate kinetic characteristics for oxidation of coal, three coal samples were collected from different coal mining areas in the Southern Junggar coalfield. Subsequently, the collected coal samples were ground into different particle sizes and tested using microscopic and macroscopic methods, including thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform … Show more

“…The geological structure of coal measures in China is generally complex, and the mining method is mainly underground. The proportion of the soft coal seam is as high as 82%. This kind of coal seam has the characteristics of soft and broken coal mass, low permeability, and a large gas content. In addition, with the increase of the depth of the coal seam, in situ stress, gas content, and gas pressure gradually increase . Under the influence of high ground stress, there are often phenomena such as sticking, jetting, and hole collapse in the construction of gas predrainage boreholes.…”

“…Based on the construction of a molecular structure model to study the characteristics of coal, Lin et al (2019) analyzed the molecular structure differences between tectonic coal and primary coal in the Pingdingshan coalfield. Zeng and Shen (2022) used thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and temperatureprogrammed oxidation to characterize the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal samples. Ghosh et al (2020) used Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to study the microstructural framework of coal in Langanji and Jaria basins and the Himalayas.…”
