We study the ascending motion of a disk rolling on an incline when its center of mass lies outside the disk axis. The problem is suitable as laboratory project for a first course in mechanics at the undergraduate level and goes beyond typical textbook problems about bi-dimensional rigid body motions. We develop a theoretical model for the disk motion based on mechanical energy conservation and compare its predictions with experimental data obtained by digital video recording.Using readily available resources, a very satisfactory agreement is obtained between the model and the experimental observations. These results complement previous ones that have been reported in the literature for similar systems.

The celebrated mathematician John E. Littlewood noted that a hoop with an attached mass rolling on a ground plane may exhibit self-induced jumping. Subsequent works showed that his analysis was flawed and revealed paradoxical behaviour that can be resolved by incorporating the inertia of the hoop. A comprehensive analysis of this problem is presented in this paper. The analysis illuminates the regularity induced in the model of the hoop when its mass moment of inertia is incorporated, shows that the paradoxical motions of the hoop are consistent with the principles of mechanics and demonstrates the simplest example in the dynamics of rigid bodies that exhibits self-induced jumping.

The acceleration sensor of a smartphone is used for the study of the uniform and uniformly accelerated circular motions in two experiments. Data collected from both experiments are used for obtaining the angular velocity and the angular acceleration, respectively. Results obtained with the acceleration sensor are in good agreement with alternative methods, like using video recordings of both experiments and a physical model of the second experiment. Keywords: rigid solid, mobile application, accele rometer sensor.Neste trabalho foi utilizado o sensor de aceleração de um smatphone em dois experimentos a fim de estudar o movimento circular uniforme e uniformemente acelerado. Os dados coletados em ambos os experimentos foram usados para obter a velocidade angular e a aceleração angular, respectivamente. Os resultados obtidos com o sensor de aceleração apresentam boa concordância com outros métodos alternativos, como usando gravações em vídeo de ambos experimentos e um modelo físico do segundo experimento. Palavras-chave: sólido rígido, aplicativo de celulares, acelerômetro.
