Experiments on Free Convection Between Vertical Plates With Symmetric Heating

Abstract: Laboratory experiments on natural convection of air between vertical parallel plates with uniform and symmetric heat fluxes are reported. Data collection was through direct temperature measurement using thermocouples and through analysis of interferograms of the flow. Data were collected over a range of heat fluxes and geometric parameters where the flow was in the developing temperature field regime. A correlation is developed that allows for the calculation of the maximum temperature variation of the plates … Show more

“…Free convection in a parallel plate channel without internal bodies has been investigated by many researchers, e.g. Bodoia and Osterle, 1 Aung et al, 2 Sparrow et al, 3 Yan and Lin, 4 Writs and Stutzman, 5 Sparrow and Azevedo, 6 and Kim et al 7 Considering the ®nite dierence solution, it is a common practice to neglect axial diusion and assume uniform pressure across the channel. It allows the solution to be carried out by marching from the inlet at the bottom; but an iterative process of matching the exit pressure to determine the unknown velocity at the inlet is required.…”

“…Wirtz and Stutzman [1] have measured the surface temperatures and the local heat transfer coefficients of a test plate placed at the center of a four-plate array with a constant interval. The test plates were fabricated with a 3-mm-thick phenolic resin base plate and foil heaters, which were glued onto both surfaces of the base plate, and then plates were heated with constant and equal surface heat fluxes.…”

“…These studies were the foundations for few others studies conducted later on. Amongst these, the experimental work by Wirtz and Stutzman [6] on developing natural convection of air flowing between vertical parallel plates with uniform and symmetric heat fluxes is frequently quoted. An up to date review on the formulas for the calculation of the heat transfer and flow rate for twodimensional natural convection between vertical plates having uniform wall temperature or uniform heat flux boundary conditions was presented by Olsson [7].…”
