The growing epidemic of chronic heart failure (CHF) has been highlighted by the World Health Organization and the European Society of Cardiology. There are only few studies assessing the epidemiology of CHF in Europe and there are no such studies in the general population in Poland, which is one of the countries representing Central and Eastern Europe -a region of high cardiovascular risk. In this paper we have discussed current prevalence of heart failure in Poland. To assess the prevalence of CHF we asked about an earlier diagnosis of CHF. In order to verify the diagnosis, we checked the coding of CHF-related services in the NHF database. Previous diagnosis of CHF was reported in 4,3% of NATPOL 2011 study participants, and in 2,4% the diagnosis was confirmed in NHS database. Please note that NATPOL 2011 was carried out in the age group 18-79 and the prevalence of heart failure increases with age and we expect the highest prevalence in the seniors (>80 years of age). However, this is more than the previous estimates.
