Experts for Validation Studies in Nursing: New Proposal and Selection Criteria

Abstract: The new criteria valued clinical experience over academic experience. The use of these criteria by researchers in the country should reduce uncertainties, difficulties, and limitations imposed by the modification/current adaptation of already existing criteria.

“…Limitations to this study include the small sample size and the use of only one setting. Another limitation might be the number of nursing experts used or the criteria used to determine expertise ( Quatrini Carvalho Passos Guimarães, Pena, Lopes, Lopes, & Bottura Leite de Barros, ). However, the definition and required number of experts remain controversial, and researchers use a variety of methods and references, in light of the lack of consensus (Barreto et al., ; de Souza Oliveira et al., ; Moreira, ; Moreira et al., ; Santos & Lucena, 2016; Seganfredo & Almeida, ).…”

“…On the other hand, due to the wide diversity of the level of professional development and research capacity of nursing professionals in Spain, especially in occupational nursing, attributes such as experience and recent practice, a willingness to take part in research and academic level have also been considered positive requirements when selecting the group of experts (Hung, Altschuld, & Lee, 2008;López-Gómez, 2018). Similarly, for validation studies in nursing and, in particular, for similar research presenting validations of ODs, specialized nursing qualifications, a degree in medicine, years of experience, and the use of the nursing taxonomy were considered a plus (Avena et al, 2014;Quatrini Carvalho Passos Guimarães, Pena, Lopes, Lopes, & Bottura Leite de Barros, 2016). Apart from these essential requirements, other criteria considered in this study included the use of computer systems containing nursing terminology and scientific production, as measured in scientific papers, talks and articles published in recent years, which at the research group's discretion, could help to define a more suitable profile for an expert able to assess the ODs as defined by the aims of the study.…”

“…Fehring's criteria for expert status are difficult to meet, not only in the context in which the study was conducted, but also in other countries where there are few nurses with doctoral degrees (Levin & Wilkinson, ). Therefore, as proposed by Quatrini Carvalho Passos Guimarães, Pena, Lopes, Lopes, and Bottura Leite de Barros (), other criteria were selected, such as professional experience or academic training, in order to achieve a better response from nurses and guarantee the diversity of perspectives in the assessments obtained.…”
