Explanation for the Decline in Coronary Heart Disease Mortality Rates in Auckland, New Zealand, Between 1982 and 1993

Abstract: Approximately half the CHD mortality rate fall in Auckland, New Zealand, was attributed to medical therapies, and approximately half was attributed to reductions in major risk factors. These findings emphasize the importance of a comprehensive strategy that maximizes the population coverage of effective treatments and actively promotes a prevention program, particularly for smoking, diet, and blood pressure reduction.

“…Although the trend has tended to reach a plateau since 1990, the overall mortality rates for CVD and CHD have fallen in most developed countries (by 24-50%) since the 1975 (7,26,46,50,(80)(81)(82)(83)(84)(85)(86)(87). The causes for reduction in CHD mortality were evaluated in adults aged 25-84 years in the USA during the 1980-2000 period (85), and the following main findings arose.…”

“…The success of primary-care research is also especially clear in relation to disease prevention. For example, more than half the observed reduction in coronary heart disease mortality has been attributed to primary and secondary prevention, 12 and many of the clinical trials underpinning preventive care of this and other important public health problems were done in a primary-care setting. 13-15 The primary-care-based Cochrane smoking addiction review group, which was stimulated by an early review done by researchers involved in the general practice smoking cessation trials, 16 now provides the evidence-base that underpins governmental policy internationally.…”
