Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar a hipótese que o teste de AVD-Glittre (TGlittre) tem validade concorrente e reprodutibilidade intra-avaliador em indivíduos com apneia obstrutiva do sono (AOS). Métodos: Foram avaliados 22 indivíduos, de ambos os sexos, com diagnóstico AOS. O TGlittre e o teste de esforço cardiopulmonar (TECP) foram realizados em dois dias diferentes, duas vezes cada, e a ordem era determinada por randomização. Resultados: A FC máxima (FCmáx) obtida no TGlittre foi de 130,6 ± 13,3 bpm e o tempo total para a realização do teste foi de 3,4 ± 0,5 min. Sobre as varáveis analisadas no TECP, foram obtidos os seguintes valores: consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2máx) = 2,4 ± 5,3 ml/kg/min, VO2 no primeiro limiar = 19,4 ± 3,9 ml/kg/min, FCmáx = 161,3 ± 15,2 bpm e o tempo total de realização do teste foi de 8,3 ± 1,6 min. Uma correlação negativa moderada foi verificada entre o tempo de realização do TGlittre e VO2max (r = -0,424; p = 0,049). Na análise da confiabilidade teste-reteste do tempo total de realização do TGlittre, foi observada uma excelente concordância e consistência entre as medidas (coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (CCI) = 0,865; IC95%: 0,379-0,965 (p ≤ 0,0001). Conclusão: O teste de TGlittre é válido e reprodutível na AOS. Além disso, é um teste de intensidade submáxima, fácil aplicação e baixo custo, que pode ser utilizado em larga escala.

Early detection of alteration of muscle strength, quantity, and quality, and sarcopenia is useful in non-cirrhotic chronic hepatitis B (NC-CHB) patients. Studies, which explored the handgrip strength (HGS) are scarce with questionable results, and no previous case-control study explored the presence of sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to assess the muscle strength [i.e.; HGS absolute (HGS A ), HGS A /body mass index (BMI)], muscle quantity [i.e.; appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM), ASM/height 2 , ASM/total body weight (TBW), ASM/BMI], and muscle quality [i.e.; HGS A /total muscle mass (TMM), HGS A /ASM] of NC-CHB patients. This was a case-control study. Cases ( n = 26) were untreated NC-CHB patients, and controls ( n = 28) were ‘apparently’ healthy participants. Muscle mass was estimated via the TMM (kg) and ASM (kg). Muscle strength was evaluated via the HGS data [i.e.; HGS A (kg), HGS A /BMI (m 2 )]. Six variants of HGS A were determined: highest values for the dominant and non-dominant hands, highest value between the two hands, averages of the three measurements for the two hands, and the average of the highest values of the two hands. Muscle quantity was expressed in three relative variants (ASM/height 2 , ASM/TBW, and ASM/BMI). Muscle quality was evaluated via relative HGS data adjusted by muscle mass (i.e.; HGS A /TMM, HGS A /ASM). Probable and confirmed sarcopenia were retained in front of low muscle strength, and low muscle strength and muscle quantity or quality, respectively. There were no significant differences between controls and NC-CHB patients in values of muscle i) Strength whatever the HGS’ mode of expression (e.g.; HGS A /BMI: 1.59 ± 0.54 vs. 1.53 ± 0.54 m 2 , p = 0.622, respectively), ii) Quantity (e.g.; ASM/BMI: 0.79 ± 0.24 vs. 0.77 ± 0.23 m 2 , p = 0.883), and iii) Quality (e.g.; HGS A /ASM: 2.00 ± 0.25 vs. 2.01 ± 0.41, p = 0.952, respectively). One NC-CHB participant had a confirmed sarcopenia. To conclude, both controls and NC-CHB patients had similar HGS values. Only one NC-CHB patient had a confirmed sarcopenia.

IntroductionInternational recommendations of the exploration of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) are focused on deficiency and not incapacity.Aims(1) To estimate the incapacity of NIDDM patients through the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) data. (2) To determine their 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) influencing factors (3) To compare data of NIDDM patient group (PG; n = 100) with those of two control groups (CG): CG1 (n = 174, healthy nonobese and nonsmoker); CG2 (n = 55, obese nondiabetic free from comorbidities).Population and methodsThe anthropometric, socioeconomic, clinical, metabolic, and 6MWT data of 100 NIDDM patients (45 females) were collected.ResultsTotal sample means ± standard deviation of age, weight, and height were 54 ± 8 years, 81 ± 14 kg, and 1.64 ± 0.09 m. (1) Measured 6MWD (566 ± 81 m) was significantly lower than the theoretical 6MWD (90% ± 12%). The profile of the PG carrying the 6MWT, was as follows: 23% had an abnormal 6MWD; at the end of the 6MWT, 21% and 12% had, respectively, a low heart rate and a high dyspnea (>5/10), and 4% had desaturation during the walk. The estimated “cardiorespiratory and muscular chain” age (68 ± 16 years) was significantly higher than the chronological age. (2) The factors that significantly influenced the 6MWD (r2 = 0.58) are included in the following equation: 6MWD (m) = −73.94 × gender (0, male; 1, female) – 3.25 × age (years) + 7.33 × leisure activity score – 35.57 × obesity (0, no; 1, yes) + 32.86 × socioeconomic level (0, low; 1, high) – 27.67 × cigarette use (0, no; 1, yes) + 8.89 × resting oxyhemoglobin saturation – 105.48. (3) Compared to the CGs, the PG had a significantly (P < 0.05) lower 6MWD (100%+9% and 100%+8%, respectively, for the CG1 and CG2).ConclusionNIDDM seems to accelerate the decline of the submaximal aerobic capacity evaluated through the 6MWD.
