Exploratory Epidemiological Study on Porcine Circovirus Type 2 Infection and Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome in the Czech Republic

Abstract: The objective of our study was to diagnose the postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and to determine the prevalence of the disease in 33 swine herds in the Czech Republic using the results of laboratory examinations of 100 pigs expressing the signs of wasting at the end of 2007. Microscopic lesions associated with the presence of porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) antigen were detected in the lymph nodes from 39 of 100 diseased pigs (39%). Based on individual assessment of severity of microscopic lymphoi… Show more

“…However Shimizu, et al (1996) say that, PRRS virus caused neither alteration of T-cell subpopulation nor cell proliferation. Ficek, et al (2010) detected PRRS virus as parallel viral infection with the presence of porcine circovirus 2. In agreement with actual knowledge can PRRS virus mark up producing of cytokine IL-10, and that result in a inhibition of function of macrophages and T-lymphocytes [7].…”

“…Moreover, SeMet has been reported to inhibit porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) in vitro in a concentration-dependent fashion between 2 and 16 µM. PCV2 is a notorious single-stranded DNA virus associated with several complications, including porcine dermatitis nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), congenital tremor type A2 (CT) and pregnant sow reproductive obstruction [63][64][65]. The large differences in concentrations of SeMet required for antiviral activity in these studies against single-stranded RNA and DNA viruses may denote some selectivity of this RSeS towards the later type of viruses, albeit more studies are required to confirm this trend.…”
