Few debates in modern academia are as heated as the one among scholars who consider the arrival of bubonic plague in Constantinople in the spring of 542 as a demographic and social disaster and those who argue for less tumultuous outcomes. Whatever side one stands on in the current discussion, the pandemic’s immediate impact on the administration, economy, politics, society and religious culture within Constantinople and the wider empire seems clear. In this article I will suggest that increased competition amongst Constantinople’s elites for a shrunken pool of suitable brides and grooms for their sons and daughters was one hitherto underappreciated result of the pandemic. The sixth-century eastern Roman historian, Procopius of Caesarea, offers ample evidence not only about the devastation wrought by the bubonic plague but also its impact on the political alliances in Constantinople. His digressions in Secret History concerning marital politicking amongst Constantinople’s elites provide evidence of this impact. Capitalizing on advances in our knowledge about Procopius both as an author and historical figure, I will analyze his writings on three levels: as history, literature and propaganda. By pondering what motivated Procopius to focus on these marital alliances and, moreover, pondering links between them, the paper offers some revisionist takes on these digressions, both as literary devices and as actual events.

Abstrak Lansia adalah seseorang yang berusia lebih dari 60 tahun dan kurang mampu dalam menafkahi diri sendiri dalam memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Hipertensi atau dikenal dengan tekanan darah tinggi adalah kondisi dimana pembuluh darah mengalami peningkatan secara menerus. Mengetahui tingkat pengetahuan lansia yang mengalami hipertensi terhadap rebusan daun salam untuk membantu menurunkan tekanan darah. Pemecahan masalah yang sesuai adalah community development. Program pengabdian dilakukan melalui 3 tahapan yaitu tahap persiapan,tahap pelaksanaan,dan tahap evaluasi. Sasaran yaitu masyarakat terutama pada lansia RT 01,02, dan 03 didesa paku alam kecamatan sungai tabuk secara khusus hasil kegiatan data lansia yang didapatkan yaitu laki-laki 8 orang perempuan 27 orang total 35 orang. Mayoritas masyarakat di desa paku alam kecamatan sungai tabuk pada RT 01, 02, dan 03 didapatkan hasil pengkajian dan pemeriksaan tekanan darah terhadap lansia, penyakit terbanyak yang diderita lansia RT 01, 02, dan 03 adalah hipertensi. Pretest (sebelum) diberikan edukasi mengenai materi daun salam dan demonstrasi cara pembuatan rebusan daun salam diperoleh pengetahuan baik 63,4 % dan setelah penyuluhan materi hipertensi dan demonstrasi cara pembuatan rebusan daun salam pada 40 peserta didapatkan hasil posttest (sesudah) pengetahuan baik diperoleh 80,5%. Ada pengaruh sebelum dan sesudah tingkat pengetahuan lansia terhadap edukasi pemberian rebusan daun salam. Kata kunci : Banjarmasin, Community development, Daun salam, lansia, hipertensi Abstract Elderly is someone who is over 60 years old and unable to support themselves in meeting their daily needs. Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition in which blood vessels increase continuously. Knowing the level of knowledge of elderly people with hypertension about bay leaf decoction to help lower blood pressure. The appropriate problem solver is community development. The service program is carried out through 3 stages, namely the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the evaluation stage. The target is the community, especially the elderly RT 01,02 and 03 in Paku Alam Village, Sungai Tabuk Sub-District, specifically the results of the activities of the elderly obtained are 8 men, 27 women, a total of 35 people. the majority of the people in Paku Alam Village, Sungai Tabuk Subdistrict at RT 01, 02, and 03 obtained healing results and blood pressure checks for the elderly, the most common disease suffered by the elderly in RT 01, 02, and 03 was hypertension. Pretest (before) given education regarding bay leaf material and a demonstration on how to make bay leaf decoction, good knowledge was obtained 63.4% and after counseling on hypertension material and demonstration of how to make bay leaf decoction to 40 participants obtained posttest results (after) good knowledge was obtained 80 , 5%. There is an influence before and after the level of knowledge of the elderly on the education of giving bay leaf decoction. Hypertension is one of the primary risk factors for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Traditional pharmacotherapy for hypertension has the potential for adverse side effects. Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) is a type of bacteria that is widely used as a probiotic in the food and biotechnology industries. This review focuses on exploring the potential of L. casei as an antihypertensive therapy. A comprehensive literature search was conducted with the keywords "blood pressure", "cardiovascular disease", "gut microbiota", "hypertension", "probiotic bacteria", and "probiotics". The identified studies reported on the antihypertensive effect of L. casei through its modulation of the microbiota in the gut. Although early experimental studies in mice are promising, further research at higher levels of evidence is required to corroborate the antihypertensive mechanism of L. casei before the probiotic can be implemented as an alternative or adjunct treatment for hypertension.
