Exploring Bibliographies for Research-related Tasks

Abstract: Bibliographies are fundamental tools for research communities. Besides the obvious uses as connection to previous research, citations are also widely used for evaluation purposes: the productivity of researchers, departments and universities is increasingly measured by counting their citations. Unfortunately, citations counters are just rough indicators: a deeper knowledge of individual citations -where, when, by whom and why -improves research evaluation tasks and supports researchers in their daily activity.… Show more

“…Scholars are daily involved in operations on bibliographic references [31]; when they write, review or evaluate a paper, they take up different scientific roles, which require them to perform sets of specific tasks. We started from their analysis to identify the requirements that any bibliographic platform could satisfy.…”

“…A relevant part of these activities falls in the research field dedicated to literature search and review that involves information seeking, sensemaking, comprehension and communication (Bethard & Jurafsky, 2010;Booth et al, 2016;Borgman & Furner, 2002;Zhang et al, 2008), and requires the retrieval, the exploration, the organization, the evaluation, and the sharing of papers, regrouped in bibliographies. Researchers spend a lot of time in exploring bibliographies (Di Iorio et al, 2015), when writing a paper, when navigating in a new research area, when evaluating papers, when searching for related work; often they start from few seed papers and apply a backward and forward search for finding interesting papers.…”

“…Citation links are extensively used to explore scientific communities [12,13]. [6] provides a list of usual tasks on bibliographies for different classes of users. The Citation Typing ontology (CiTo) [16] presents a typology of citations according to the relation between the research papers they express.…”
