Exploring hidden diversity in Southeast Asia’s Dermogenys spp. (Beloniformes: Zenarchopteridae) through DNA barcoding

Abstract: Members of the freshwater halfbeak genus Dermogenys are hard to identify to the species level, despite several previous attempts to isolate fixed meristic, morphometric and colour pattern differences. This has led to ongoing confusion in scientific literature, records of species occurrence, and entries in museum collections. Here, a DNA barcoding study was conducted on the genus to gain further understanding of its taxonomic status across the Southeast Asian region. Fish were collected from 33 localities, span… Show more

“…Halfbeaks are a relatively understudied group of fishes that represent an independent evolutionary origin of viviparity that occurred in a geographically distinct region (Southeast Asia) from the more commonly studied Poeciliids. Specifically, we focus on the pygmy halfbeak, Dermogenys collettei, a small, internally fertilizing, viviparous fish inhabiting freshwater rivers, streams and lakes in the Malay Peninsula (Downing Meisner, 2001;Nurul Farhana et al, 2018). Pygmy halfbeaks are characterized by an elongated lower jaw that facilitates prey capture at the surface of the water, where they spend the vast majority of their time.…”

“…is collected from the Keisalam River only. It is worth mentioning here that members of the freshwater halfbeak genus Dermogenys are hard to identify to the species level, due to morphometric and colour pattern differences (Farhana et al, 2018). The highly encountered order Cypriniformes is again dominated by the family Cyprinidae where Garra nigricollis is reported for the first time from the Karnaphuli drainage.…”

“…Several regional DNA barcoding studies have demonstrated its e cacy to delimitate sh species, for instance, in Australia 22 , South China Sea 23 , Indian Ocean 24 , and Indo-Paci c coral shes 25 . DNA barcoding has proven to be a reliable method in identifying cryptic and potentially new sh species [26][27][28][29] , marine larval shes [30][31][32][33] , and food origins .…”
