Background Women with chronic disease are at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Pregnancies which pose higher risk, often require increased medical supervision and intervention. How women perceive their pregnancy risk and its impact on health behaviour is poorly understood. The aim of this systematic review of qualitative literature is to evaluate risk perceptions of pregnancy in women with chronic disease. Methods Eleven electronic databases including grey literature were systematically searched for qualitative studies published in English which reported on pregnancy, risk perception and chronic disease. Full texts were reviewed by two researchers, independently. Quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Qualitative checklist and data were synthesised using a thematic synthesis approach. The analysis used all text under the findings or results section from each included paper as data. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO. Results Eight studies were included in the review. Three themes with sub-themes were constructed from the analysis including: Information Synthesis (Sub-themes: Risk to Self and Risk to Baby), Psychosocial Factors (Sub-themes: Emotional Response, Self-efficacy, Healthcare Relationship), and Impact on Behaviour (Sub-themes: Perceived Risk and Objective Risk). Themes fitted within an overarching concept of Balancing Act. The themes together inter-relate to understand how women with chronic disease perceive their risk in pregnancy. Conclusions Women’s pregnancy-related behaviour and engagement with healthcare services appear to be influenced by their perception of pregnancy risk. Women with chronic disease have risk perceptions which are highly individualised. Assessment and communication of women’s pregnancy risk should consider their own understanding and perception of risk. Different chronic diseases introduce diverse pregnancy risks and further research is needed to understand women’s risk perceptions in specific chronic diseases.

Aim: We aimed to explore a new approach and theoretical basis for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of pre-eclampsia. Methods: In total, 103 pre-eclamptic patients (study group: SG) and 100 healthy pregnant women (control group: CG) were enrolled. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to detect the expression level of serum Hoxb3. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the content of serum sFlt-1. Pregnancy outcomes in the two groups were recorded, and the correlations of the levels of Hoxb3 and sFlt-1 with the pregnancy outcomes were analyzed. Results: The relative expression of serum Hoxb3 mRNA in the CG was significantly higher than that in the SG, whereas the content of serum sFlt-1 in the CG was significantly lower than that in the SG. Compared with the CG, the SG had a significantly lower number of spontaneous deliveries, higher number of cesarean deliveries and significantly higher number of uneventful perinatal births. The incidences of intrauterine growth restriction, intrauterine distress, premature infants and neonatal deaths in perinatal infants in the SG were significantly higher than those in the CG. According to the analysis of receiver operating characteristic curves, the areas under the curves of Hoxb3, sFlt-1 and their combined detection for diagnosing preeclampsia were 0.799, 0.856 and 0.930, respectively. The areas under the curves for predicting poor perinatal outcomes were 0.724, 0.828 and 0.871, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, Hoxb3 and sFlt-1 have certain reference significance for the risk evaluation of pre-eclampsia and the adverse pregnancy outcomes of pre-eclampsia women.

Pregnant women tend to be more concern with the health and food issue. During pregnancy, women will have physiological changes, such as intestinal disorders, metabolic diseases, and obesity. They tend to reduce consume of food with pregnancy-related health risk. In order to achieve a healthy pregnancy, information related to health and food issue are needed. Pregnant women were actively seek information from a variety of sources. The research method used is literature review, we would like to identify which source of information that most used by pregnant to meet their information need and how is their belief about the sources. The conclusion of this study that information required by pregnant women related with information regarding medicine or medication use in pregnancy, nutrition, and health disorders. Dominant information used by pregnant women were health practitioners, online information, and family/friends. Although used by many pregnant women, the internet believed as an unreliable source of health information. Health practitioners were the main trusted information sources. This study is essential for information provider in designing healthy living information and educating health literacy for pregnant women..
