Exploring magnetic capture to improve the detection of human norovirus in strawberries

Abstract: Human norovirus is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide, and its detection in foods remains a challenge due to the difficulty of eluting and enriching trace amounts of viral particles. In this study, we developed porcine gastric mucin–labeled magnetic capture probes and optimized the conditions for their binding with norovirus, elution of viral particles, and RNA isolation based on the previous research. We evaluated the magnetic capture‐based pretreatment method in artificially contaminated strawber… Show more

“…Infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are prone to severe, protracted illness following NV infection. 36 NVs belong to Caliciviridae and comprise 180 VP1 protein monomers containing the S and P domains. The viral capsid core forms the S domain, while the P domain consists of the P1 and P2 (putatively active) domains that function as receptor-binding sites and use viral surface tentacles to recognize host cells.…”

“…NV infections are transmitted between individuals by the fecal–oral route as well as through contaminated water and food. Infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are prone to severe, protracted illness following NV infection . NVs belong to Caliciviridae and comprise 180 VP1 protein monomers containing the S and P domains.…”
