“…Therefore, planting plants on slopes can significantly reduce the MWD in eroded sediment, and different soil and water conservation measures can further reduce the MWD in eroded sediment ( Figure 10). A contour tillage ditch on a slope can slow down the surface runoff, and runoff can even be stored in the ditch even under light rain, so that coarse particles are deposited in the ditch [62,63]. In contrast, straw mulch can more effectively intercept coarse particles [61]; this outcome is similar to the results of this study.…”

“…1), and the soil conditions among them were similar. Each plot was 20 m × 5 m (length × width), and details of the runoff plot design were shown by Dai et al (2018). In HT plots, day-lily hedgerows were constructed by transplanting seedlings on October 26, 2011.…”

“…An erosive rain event occurred when rainfall resulted in the generation of soil and water loss at an interval of less than 6 h. A total of 264 erosion observations were recorded during the entire experiment. Surface runoff volume was calculated according to a pre-determined water level-volume ratio using a water-level gauge installed in a runoff bucket; sediment concentration in the runoff was calculated using the drying method after collecting a water sample from the runoff bucket after thorough mixing; eroded sediment amount was calculated according to total surface runoff volume (Dai et al 2018). Precipitation was recorded using an automatic meteorological station situated 20 m from the experimental plots.…”

“…In the red soil region of southern China, high rainfall intensity and amounts occur frequently due to the well-developed monsoon. The annual precipitation is usually 800 to 2500 mm, which is 1.9 to 2.8 times higher than the national mean and 70% of the rainfall events occur from April to September as rainstorms [28], which can lead to severer soil and water loss, non-point source pollution, and further degradation in agriculture land. Under the rainfall conditions in this region, the potential of different groundcover plants for reducing soil erosion and non-point source pollution has not been adequately investigated [20,21].…”
