Exploring Research through Design in Animal Computer Interaction

Abstract: This paper explores Research through Design (RtD) as a potential methodology for developing new interactive experiences for animals. We present an example study from an on-going project and examine whether RtD offers an appropriate framework for developing knowledge in the context of Animal-Computer Interaction, as well as considering how best to document such work. We discuss the design journey we undertook to develop interactive systems for captive elephants and the extent to which RtD has enabled us to expl… Show more

“…[25,45]), we are unaware of HCI research which seeks to promote engagement with nature and wildlife in this way (though see REF). ACI is typically concerned with animals that have existing relationships with humans, whether as pets [16], farm animals [11] or zoo inhabitants [12], and focuses on devices with which such creatures interact, often developed using some variation of 'pawticipatory' design [26]. Several of our early proposals (see Figure 2) were more interventionist and might benefit from ACI approaches and principles.…”

“…In a Research through Design approach to finding a solution to a brief, the iterative making of designed objects is emphasized in order to fully appreciate their qualities and to enable sharing and testing with users [10]. In this respect, a ZooJam, and specifically the crafting session, can be an early stage in a Research through Design process, stimulating fresh perspectives by facilitating new ways of framing old challenges [6].…”

“…This involved many design iterations, as well as planning and implementing a series of prototypes to be tested in the field." [29] Active involvement of experts is reported by e.g., Gupfinger and Kaltenbrun-ner [30], who presented initial work towards auditory interfaces for grey parrots while actively consulting with experts to interpret the exact behavioral response of parrots to different musical stimuli.…”
