Exploring seaport - dry ports dyadic integration to meet the increase in container vessels size

Abstract: This paper explores the implications of vessel enlargement on seaport competitiveness and investigates the dyadic integration between seaports and dry ports to address drastic vessel size acceleration in the Malaysian seaport system. Therefore, this paper aims to reveal the seaport/dry port dyadic relationship to improve seaport competitiveness in light of the increase in vessel size in the arena of global trade. To achieve this aim, mixed methods were applied by conducting qualitative and quantitative approac… Show more

“…According to Jeevan and Roso (2019), current Malaysian dry ports have no significant marketing strategy to promote their services to the clients. This is because limited fund allocation and professional workforce on dry port marketing have limited their popularity to be exposed among their current and other potential users.…”

“…Whereas for dry port, competitors are their key constrain. In general, the functionalities of Malaysian dry ports are categorized into four main functions, including transport and logistics function, information processing function, seaport function and valueadded service function (Jeevan and Roso, 2019). While executing these functions, each dry port must compete to excel in the freight chain network, especially in the hinterland region.…”

“…Due to the congested roads and inadequate rail connections, for many ports the weakest link in their transport chain is their hinterland access, causing delays and increasing the hinterland transport costs, which represents about 60% of the total transport costs (Behdani et al, 2020). Therefore, functional port hinterland access is crucial for the efficiency of the whole intermodal transport chain (Roso et al, 2009;Jeevan and Roso, 2019). In addition, road transport is mainly dependent on fossil fuels, which heavily contributes to the transport sector's greenhouse gas emissions (European Commission, 2017).…”

“…In order to counteract decreasing freight rates and continued uncertainty in maritime transport, shipping lines form alliances or cooperative agreements ( Clott et al 2018 ). On the other hand, the container vessel size is continually increasing to meet economies of scale at sea, but creating capacity and operating problems on the port-side ( Jeevan and Roso 2019 ).…”
