Exploring Socio-Technical Dependencies in Open Source Software Projects

Abstract: Comprehension of Open Source Software (OSS) projects is traditionally driven by the plethora of data produced and maintained by these projects. The data, in one hand, encapsulates the tacit knowledge on the evolution of the software itself. And, on the other hand, provides the history of communication and collaboration of the community. Acquisition and analysis of such data has been mostly manual or semiautomated and error-prone, mainly due to unstructured and substandard data representation. This increases th… Show more

“…Next, "global software development" (GSD) has been a hot area of focus for researchers (from 2001 to 2018). The analysis of literature, such as [9,13,16,19,50,51,54,61,[82][83][84][85][86][87], also supports this finding.…”

“…Various studies in cluster 6 focused on using automated tools to facilitate STC measurement. For instance, Syeed et al [87] proposed an STC-based automated tool that analyses and visualizes OSS development data through different data services. MacKellar [106] proposed a tool based on STC to suggest and support coordination activities during software engineering project development.…”

“…The findings revealed that the quality of the software is associated with the match between the socio and technical aspects of development efforts. Syeed et al (2013) and Zhang et al (2019) presented a similar STC strategy consisting of two main dimensions, namely; social and technical. The social dimension includes communication related activities among people who are classified according to their roles such as core members, project leaders, and passive or active users.…”
