Exploring the Applicability of Robot-Assisted UV Disinfection in Radiology

Abstract: The importance of infection control procedures in hospital radiology departments has become increasingly apparent in recent months as the impact of COVID-19 has spread across the world. Existing disinfectant procedures that rely on the manual application of chemical-based disinfectants are time consuming, resource intensive and prone to high degrees of human error. Alternative non-touch disinfection methods, such as Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI), have the potential to overcome many of the limitatio… Show more

“…Besides keeping social distance and monitor body temperature of pedestrians, service robots are mainly used for disinfection and delivery. In order to reduce the risk of cross-infection, disinfection robots replace manual labors and perform disinfection work in hospitals [136]. Delivery robots distribute food and medicine automatically to reduce the direct contact between hospital staff and patients.…”

“…Other settings where the applicability of UVGI has been evaluated include burn units [69], hyperbaric chambers [27], radiology rooms [29], oncology units [35], and clinical labs within a hospital [50]. Use of UVGI technologies in hallways or other public areas was only reported in a small number of studies [28,46].…”

“…This would enable sufficient disinfection of hard to reach surfaces. McGinn et al [17] used a novel design to shield the radiation envelope of UV robots so that it could be used along with humans. Similarly, a prototype of autonomous UV disinfection robot with improvements in mechanical and electrical design was developed in [18].…”
