Exploring the current status of neuroendocrine tumours: a population-based analysis of epidemiology, management and use of resources

Abstract: BackgroundNeuroendocrine tumours (NETs) are rare malignancies characterised by its capacity to synthesise and secrete monoamines, due to its neuroendocrine origin. Its varied locations and symptoms have traditionally been responsible for extended delays in their diagnosis. The interest of this study was to characterise the patient population diagnosed with NETs in Spain and to revise how the disease is managed, together with the hospitalisation costs of these patients.MethodsThe database included records of al… Show more

“…Nearly half of GEP-NETs patients present with late stage disease from the midgut or pancreas, with 5-year survival ranging from 26 to 75% and substantial associated cancer-related morbidity [ 2 , 6 8 ]. Treatment is expensive, with estimated costs per patient more than twice that of colon cancer [ 9 12 ] in part due to continuous therapy with somatostatin analogues (SSAs), a costly monthly injection [ 13 – 18 ].…”

“…Neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare neoplasms arising from neuroendocrine cells [ 1 ]. The extensive presence of these specialized cells in the body facilitates occurrence in many organ systems, primarily the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lung [ 1 , 2 ].…”

“…Neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare neoplasms arising from neuroendocrine cells [ 1 ]. The extensive presence of these specialized cells in the body facilitates occurrence in many organ systems, primarily the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lung [ 1 , 2 ]. The body-wide presentation, diverse and potentially nonspecific symptoms, and the lack of education among the wider healthcare professional community make timely diagnosis and management challenging [ 1 , 3 ].…”

“…NETs are rare tumors. However, data collected over the past 20 years in western countries showed an incidence of 1–5 per 100,000 inhabitants, with an increasing tendency due to improvements in identification and characterization [ 2 , 3 ]. The crude incidence of gastrointestinal NETs or gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) has markedly increased over the last years and is now estimated to be 5.25/100,000/year with a prevalence of 35/100,000/year [ 4 ].…”
