Exploring the Energy Saving Potential in Private, Public and Non-Motorized Transport for Ten Swedish Cities

Abstract: Transport energy conservation research in urban transport systems dates back principally to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC) “Arab Oil Embargo” (1973–1974) and the Iranian revolution (1979), when global oil supplies became threatened and costs rose steeply. Two subsequent Gulf Wars (1991 and 2003) highlighted the dangerous geo-political dimensions of Middle-Eastern oil. In latter times, the urgency to reduce global CO2 output to avoid catastrophic climate change has achieved great … Show more

“…In detail, it quantified the consequences of a mode shift and limitedly growing pkm (pay attention to this: according to [68], travelling shorter distances are proposed for that purpose) in Lithuanian passenger transport and demonstrated the savings but not the absolute reductions in FEC and PEC and associated GHG emissions. Findings are in line with results obtained in [10, [69][70][71][72][73], where both a mode shift and other ES cases are analysed based on assumptions on national context and the mastered modelling tools. Specifically, in [10], the Hungarian case was presented.…”

“…As a significant global source of metals such as aluminum and nickel, Russia's limited supply may have caused international aluminum buyers (especially the EU) from the construction and packaging industries to face severe shortages when demand is high (Nagarjuna, 2022). Histories suggest that wars and armed conflicts increase the price of fossil fuels, negatively impacting the transportation (Kenworthy and Svensson, 2022), which in turn affects construction, particularly prefabricated construction in terms of the component transportation (Wu et al ., 2021). In accordance with the contingency theory, changes in the external environment (e.g.…”

“…They provide modal shares for the largest Norwegian cities using data from the Norwegian National Travel Survey collected in 2013/14 and 2017/18. For Swedish cities, we use data from a study (Kenworthy and Svensson, 2022) reporting the "percentage of total daily trips by cycling" for ten Swedish cities. For Finland, the data are obtained from the regional publications of the Finnish National Travel Survey (FNTS).…”
