Exploring the growth patterns of medical demand for eye care: a longitudinal hospital-level study over 10 years in China

Abstract: Background: The increasing demand for eye care inflicts a heavy burden on the eye care system. The uneven distribution of demand dynamically exacerbates the supply-demand imbalance. Systematic explorations of the growth patterns of the demand for eye care are needed to detect potential influences on the safety and quality of medical services. Methods: This is an observational longitudinal study at the hospital level. We exported 8 million outpatient visit records over 10 years from the electronic health record (… Show more

“…As the percentage of prescriptions containing ocular topical anti-infectives decreased, the increased number of prescriptions of topical anti-infectives may be due to increased demand and supply of ocular healthcare in China [ 11 ]. The reason for this decline may be the antimicrobial stewardship program in the ophthalmology departments.…”

“…They identified that ARIMA (0,0,1) was the best fit and yielded the MAPE of 8.91% [ 12 ]. A group in China conducted an observational study which analyzed patient’s visits across 10 years at an eyecare facility [ 13 ]. They observed a continuous increase in patient visits over the years leading to an increased demand and hence more burden on the eyecare system.…”

“…However, the demand for eye care has imposed a heavy burden on this system. Previous studies have shown the increasing magnitude of medical demand, and the growth patterns of medical demand have critical management implications for optimizing medical supply and improving the safety and quality of medical care [ 2 ]. A study performed from 1995 to 2017 showed that the national density of ophthalmologists in the United States (US) has decreased from 6.30 to 5.68 ophthalmologists per 100,000 people, and the workforce is in the older age group [ 3 ].…”
