Exploring the performance of partially reconfigurable point-to-point interconnects

Abstract: An ever larger share of FPGAs are supporting Dynamic and Partial Reconfiguration (DPR). A reconfigurable point-to-point interconnect (ρ-P2P) is a communication mechanism based on DPR that swaps between different precomputed configurations stored in partial bitstreams. ρ-Point-to-Point (P2P) is intended as a lightweight interconnect that suits the reconfigurable systems where a limited number of configurations are desirable. This paper assesses the pros and cons of ρ-P2P in terms of resource and performance dep… Show more

“…This is the case of [40], which introduces the concept of tunable connections (TCONs), implemented in the routing resources of a theoretical device architecture. A different approach is the reconfigurable crossbar called ρ-P2P proposed in [41]. In this work, the authors proposed saving all the possible routing configurations of the crossbar as PBS, in such a way that routing can be modified by reconfiguring only the frames containing routing resources, reducing the configuration time.…”

“…It used regular interconnection for the communications between building blocks. A reconfigurable point-to-point interconnect is proposed in the approach of Abdali et al (2017) to provide a lightweight reconfigurable interconnect system. However, the previous work in Harkin et al (2009) and Carrillo et al (2012) have highlighted the challenges of supporting the irregular communication patterns of SNNs due to its Manhattan style interconnections.…”
