This study addresses efficient water usage in wheat cultivation in a semi-arid region of India with clay loam soil and an increasing water supply-demand gap. It focuses on optimizing drip irrigation (DI) scheduling, of wheat crops, based on canopy air temperature difference (CATD) using the crop water stress index (CWSI). The field experiments were conducted for two winter seasons, employing high-discharge drip irrigation (DI) on wheat crop (variety - GW 366) at Junagadh Agricultural University (JAU), Gujarat, India. The experiment had nine treatments, each replicated three times in randomized blocks. The DI treatments labeled as T1 to T6, were irrigated at CATD values of -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, and 1 °C, respectively.. While T7 were irrigated by border irrigation. In order to define upper and lower baselines of CWSI, well watered treatments (T8) and extreme dry treatment (T9) DI were considered. The drip irrigation system (DIS) had an application rate of 7.78 mm/h with a uniformity coefficient of 90.40%. Compared to surface irrigation, DI resulted in water savings ranging from 3.52% (T1) to 43.24% (T6). Using real-time CATD data, the theoretical CWSI (CWSITh) and the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) based semi-empirical CWSI (CWSIVPD) were calculated as 0.3351 and 0.3668, respectively. CATD values showed significant variation in CWSI across treatments. The CWSI demonstrated sensitivity to water stress during critical growth stages. The study identified an optimal CATD of -1 °C, yielding 36.48% higher crop yield (4744 kg/ha), 30.23% water savings (388.42 mm), and notable 95.67% more water use efficiency (12.21 kg/ha-mm,), surpassing the outcomes of border irrigation (3476 kg/ha, 556.74 mm and 6.24 kg/ha-mm). These findings hold significant implications for farmers and policymakers, effectively addressing food and water security concerns. The study underscores the efficiency of DI combined with CATD-based irrigation scheduling in optimizing wheat crop performance. In the context of critical water management, this research provides essential insights for sustainable agricultural practices.

Soils are crucial life supporters and nutrient providers, their functionality impacted by their nutritional balance, pH, and organic matter content. These substrates help regulate water, support diverse organisms, and play a critical role in carbon sequestration, especially in the context of climate change. However, soils are under threat from anthropogenic and climatic pressures, warranting active resource management strategies. The European Union (EU) has acknowledged soil sustainability’s importance, encouraging eco-friendly agricultural practices and enhanced soil carbon storage. However, the criticality of soils is often overlooked when establishing global sustainable development goals. Counteracting soil degradation is key in battling desertification and influenced by factors like unsustainable agriculture, deforestation, and poor irrigation. Innovative solutions like circular economy approaches and sustainable biomass utilization are necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also, improving dietary habits and reducing food waste can help mitigate the environmental impact of food consumption, with a shift towards plant-based proteins being more sustainable. Addressing these challenges will contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.

Impact of Different Irrigation Methods on the Main Chemical Characteristics of Typical Mediterranean Fluvisols in Portugal

The sustainable management of Mediterranean agricultural soils, characterized by salinization and low organic matter content, requires a thorough understanding of their temporal and spatial evolution. The focal point of this investigation encompasses an area of 6769 ha within the Portuguese Mediterranean basin, from which as many as 686 topsoil specimens were acquired during the periods 2001/2002 and 2011/2012 for the purpose of scrutinizing soil organic matter (SOM) content, pH measured in water, and electrical conductivity (EC). The methodology employed both classical and geostatistical techniques, and the terrestrial samples were classified in accordance with the irrigation mechanisms in use (namely, drip and sprinkler systems), subsequently juxtaposed with their counterparts in rainfed systems. Predictive maps were generated using the Ordinary Kriging algorithm for spatial interpolation. The findings demonstrate that irrigated Fluvisols displayed lower SOM content compared to rainfed soils, with sprinkler-irrigated soils experiencing a 16.1% decrease and drip-irrigated soils showing a more pronounced 26.6% decrease. Moreover, drip-irrigated soils contained 12.5% less SOM compared to sprinkler-irrigated soils. The pH levels stabilized at around 6.6 in both rainfed and irrigated soils, with no significant differences observed between the irrigation methods. Furthermore, irrigated Fluvisols exhibited higher EC values compared to rainfed soils, with both sprinkler and drip-irrigated soils showing values that were 35.2% higher. These results underscore the impact of irrigation practices on soil properties, including elevated EC values due to increased soil salt accumulation. The study highlights the necessity of considering specific irrigation systems and associated practices to ensure sustainable soil health and productivity. Adopting management approaches that account for these factors is crucial for preserving optimal soil conditions in Mediterranean agricultural systems.
