Exploring the potential of electrostatic precipitation as an alternative particulate matter filtration system in aircraft cabins

Abstract: Over the last few decades, significant efforts have been made by aircraft manufacturers to reduce the overall energetic consumption of aircraft engines. Besides providing thrust and electric power, an engine must also provide pressurized fresh air to the cabin. A substantial part of the outside air compressed by the engine is "bled" off the engine and passed through air conditioning packs to be cooled and supplied to the cabin. This "bleed-air" pressurizes and heats the cabin to overcome extreme external condi… Show more

“…Notably, we did not observe any emission of O 3 from the HEPA ESP technology in this study. Accounts in the literature report varying O 3 emission from both portable , and in-duct , systems. A high variability of O 3 emissions has been measured across a large number of ESP devices .…”

“…Usually, the effectiveness of air purification is investigated by a test setup that reduces the complexity of the system. For instance, a single-pass collection effectiveness assessment can be used, and the concentration before and after the cleaning device can be compared [9]. However, due to this simplification, the influence of the distance neither to the particle source nor to the air inlets and outlets can be determined.…”

“…The cleaning efficiency depends on the type of matter that has to be removed from the indoor air. The contaminants could be particulate matter [1][2][3]8,9], volatile organic compounds [10], or inorganic gaseous compounds. Furthermore, in the case of particulate matter, the cleaning efficiency of an air cleaner depends on the particle size distribution [2,3,6].…”
